Vintage Kart Meeting A Grand Success

from Jason Fewins 2 March 2016

Glenburnie district came alive last weekend with the smell of two stroke, as karters from as far as New South Wales merged into the South East and surrounding districts as the Mount Gambier Kart Club hosted its third annual Vintage Kart Meeting.

The three day event started last Friday as drivers took to the 760m bitumen circuit and put themselves and their machines to the test. With entrants ages starting from their late teens through to senior drivers on the wrong side of 70, there was plenty of enthusiasm and experience amongst the drivers.  Free entry to the event meant a great number of spectators were on hand to witness some great driving talent as local residents supported the event well.

Vintage karts are spread over 5 different eras and with each of the eras having a number of different engine configurations available, there was plenty of variety.

With the Vintage Meeting growing in attendance every year, the 2016 event doubled the entries from last year and proved to be a must, for those amongst the vintage karting scene.

During the course of Saturday drivers tweaked and fine tuned their racing machines as lap times were recorded for those that wished to keep track of their progress.  These times were then used to determine a top 10 shoot out style event as drivers had the opportunity to put in a hot lap and attempt to record their best times. Amongst the top 10 were 4 twins, two 130cc and 4 100cc engines.

At the conclusion of the shoot out Adelaide driver Michael Yeo proved to be the driver to beat placing a blistering lap of 37.885 in his twin powered Rotax, followed by  Josh Tynan with a time of 38.115 secs and rounding out the top 3 was Robert Hunter putting down a lap in 38.395.

Other class winners over the weekend was George Johnson who won the prize for best presented kart in his Era 4 Tony Kart and Chris Buch who showcased his DAP Greyhound.
