Seven Mackay Sugar City Titles

The Mackay Kart Club held the Seven Mackay Sugar City Titles on Saturday, 12th March. There were 40 drivers over 8 classes competing and drivers were greeted with slightly overcast skies, but fortunately it turned into a perfect day for racing.

Drivers were given the option at drivers briefing to run the meeting over the 2 days or run into the evening under lights and complete it in the one day. With the low numbers compared to previous years, it was a unanimous decision to knock it over on the Saturday, which was all wrapped up by 7.30pm.

The most hotly contested classes were Cadet 12 and KA4 Junior Light. These are some of the youngest drivers on track, but they sure know how to put on a show for the spectators.

Eventual winner of Cadet 12, Max Deguara, had some great battles during the heats with Dylan LeGarde and Cameron Vassallo, but the final was a different story. There was a coming together in the opening laps of the final, which left Dylan and Cameron out of the race. This left the door open for Keelan O’Brien to latch onto Max’s back bumper and hound him for most of the race. Damian White tried as hard as he could to latch onto the front runners but in the end had to settle for 3rd. Considering the age of these boys, all under 12 years old, there was some great close racing all day with very few incidents.

The other class that brought the spectators to the fence was KA4 Junior Light. Jayden Muir had been the class of the field all day, coming home first in all the heats. Riley LeGarde and Nicholas Garioch were the boys chasing Jayden all day, their lap times were almost identical lap after lap. But because it was a “Dead Man Final” (meaning, where you finish the final race is your finishing position for the day) Jayden had to settle for 3rd overall because Riley and Nicholas muscled past him on the opening laps of the final.  With their lap times being so close it would have taken a desperate overtaking move for the boys in 2nd and 3rd to get around Riley once he got to the front. They all drove well beyond their years showing some of the senior classes how it should be done, it was a joy to watch.

KA3 Senior Heavy saw James Mogford and Steve Muscat locked together all day, with Dale McDonnell doing everything he could to stay with the front guys. The final turned into a two horse race with Steve and James pulling away mid race. The lead then changed a number of times, with Steve using his many years of racing to his advantage holding James out until the last 3 laps. In the end James made his move and was able to just stay in front of Steve to take the checker and win the day. Both drivers were obviously spent after the tuff battle, but were all smiles, congratulating each other on a job well done.
