2016 City of Whyalla Titles

from Ricki Cook 6 July 2016

Whyalla hosted the coveted City of Whyalla Titles over the weekend of 2 and 3 July. This Go Karting extravaganza is held annually at the Mount Young track located 5km south of Whyalla on the Port Lincoln highway.

The weekend proved to be a success for the Whyalla Go Kart Club hosting their annual City Titles. Entrants from Adelaide (Southern) and Barossa mixed it up with the Whyalla team across most divisions.

Cadet 9’s Ianelli, Tarbotten and Hillcock tussled for the top 3 placings for the weekend and set quite a good pace.

In Cadet 12 Aaron Oliver took first overall with clear wins in all heats. Clearly a fast and clean up and comer in the driving stakes.

KA4 Junior Light racer Cooper Jones triumphed with wins in all heats, totally outclassing the competition. The local Whyalla lad surely came through with the goods and did the club proud.

TAG 125’s Dave Camwell showed class with wins across the board, while Harper, Hubner and Simmonds fought it out for the minor placings. No restrictions for these Whyalla veterans!

Restricted 125 Lights had the biggest field of the meet and was dominated by Daniel Boorman from Southern. Including top guns from Adelaide, local driver Luke Clee put up a good show amongst the likes of Wade Ormsby, Darren Huxtable and Liam Moss.

Restricted Heavies saw much rough and tumble between Whyalla and Adelaide crews. Owen took out the podium’s first place with Tarbotten 2nd and Chapman in 3rd. Sampson put in a good effort but was plagued with mechanical issues in the end.

The weather was cold but not wet thankfully, but still the track was a little slippery until the rubber was laid down.

Many entrants and spectators turned out for the event over the weekend, despite voting responsibilities, which provided a warm atmosphere amongst friends.

Saturday night saw a bonfire event with giveaways from our valued sponsors and good times with which to wind down a bit.

The lovely staff in the canteen catered to everyone’s needs throughout the days and also opened early for much needed breakfast to fuel those racer’s bellies and energy levels.

All in all, another fine event turned on thanks to the Whyalla Club, travelling drivers, stewards, members and enthusiasts.

Thank you to all.
