Wyatt's Win at City of Melbourne Title

Karting Tas report from City of Melbourne Titles, by Stuart Lee 16 August 2016

Tasmanian kart driver Zane Wyatt confirmed his standing as one of the best drivers to come from Australia's most southern state after winning the TaG 125 Heavy Title at the weekends City of Melbourne Titles.

Wyatt, who had just returned from a 5 week holiday in Europe on Wednesday, dominated TaG 125 Heavy with a clean sweep of qualifying, heats, Pre-final and the 16 lap Final.

The 7-time Tasmanian Kart Champion has raced sparingly this year, focusing mainly on spinning the spanners for Brody Appleby in the National Series along with helping the AWC Motorsport Academy drivers.

Wyatt also competed in KA3 Senior Heavy and finishing 6th in the final.

Johnathan Males was another Launceston Karter to reach the podium with a solid 2nd in KA3 Masters after a hard fought race with Phil Smith and Peter O'Neill, with the later taking the win. In all, 20 Tasmanian drivers made the trip over the ditch to compete in one of Australia's best race meetings.

Cadet 9 - Xavier Renshaw was the best of the Tasmanians during qualifying and the heats, however a DNF in the final was not the end result he was after. Darcy Whelan and Toby Callow battled hard on a track they hadn't seen until Saturday practise and both improved during heats with Callow claiming 14th in the final whilst Whelan finished 17th.

Cadet 12 - Jesse Keeling and Campbell Whelan both struggled in qualifying with 34th and 36th respectively but fought gallantly to the end with solid results of 22nd and 27th in the final.

KA4 Junior Light - two Launceston Kart Club members battled a big field of 34 karters. Tate Frost had good qualifying pace with a great 5th fastest time. After a couple of top ten placings in the heats and the pre-final, Frost started the final from grid 9, but just didn't have the pace to move forward ending in 12th. Tyson Phegan tasted the mainland competition for the first time and can hold his head high with improvement in each heat and setting personal best times in the final to finish 31st.

KA4 Junior Heavy - Kaina Toon flew the Tassie and Girl-power flag in this class with solid results in the heats to start the final off grid 5. Kiana battled hard in the 16 lap final ending with a very credible 7th spot.

KA3 Junior - Tate Frost had a busy weekend also competing in this class alongside Launceston's Lochie Dalton. Both however will be slightly disappointed with their pace after showing some good form on home soil. In the end Dalton claimed 16th whilst Frost was one spot further back in 17th.

KA3 Senior Light - STKC member Zevie Eisentraut had a torrid qualifying where he failed to register a lap and a DNS (did not start) in heat one due to mechanical issues. At least the Sunday racing was slightly better finishing 16th in the final in a field of 22.

KA3 Heavy - another STKC member competing in this class, Jonathan McDonald. After a couple of top ten finishes in the heats, he was set for a good final only to crash out on lap 9 ending any hope of another top ten finish.

TaG Restricted Light - Launceston's Ryan Jenkins drove well to secure a grid spot of 7 for the final and was right in the battle until mid-race when his kart went off finishing 9th at his first mainland race meeting.

TaG Restricted Super Heavy - yet again, another LKC member competing with Shane Toon saving his best result for the final where he was able to finish 6th.

TaG 125 Light - 4 Tasmanians were competing with Matthew Distill the best of the locals with a very impressive 8th in the final that arguably had the best drivers in Australia competing. Unfortunately, Brad Hobden had an up and down race meeting finishing with a DNF in the final whilst Launceston's Adam Garwood drove a solid final to secure a well deserved 18th and Hobart's Sam Jackson finished 23rd after a solid pre final.

TaG 125 Heavy - won by Launceston's Zane Wyatt whilst fellow LKC member Troy Stone finish 6th. Stone had a weekend from hell with 3 DNFs which meant a grid spot of 16th for the final. however he had great pace in the final being clearly 2nd fastest to Wyatt on track and was able to drive through the field to finish 6th.

Karting Tasmania congratulates all drivers and crew on their racing.
