Tasmanian Statewide Series, Round 3

from Stuart Lee 25 August 2016

Round 3 of the Andrew Walter Construction Tasmanian Statewide Series was conducted at the Southern Tasmanian Kart Club of the weekend in dry conditions albeit a bit on the chilly side.

Good to see nearly 100 competitors compete for the coveted red plate with some very good close racing through the day.

  • Full results from the meeting are on CMS HERE
  • Progressive series points after round 3 are HERE (Excel format)

Cadet 9

Darcy Whelan headed into the 3 round with a handy 28 point lead over Toby Callow in the series, however Xavier Renshaw competing in his first round of the series took the win in the final from Stevie Smith who had her best weekend of the year with Callow in third. The points have changed little with Whelan heading into the final round with a 27 point advantage over Callow with Ollie Richardson third some 91 point from the lead, whilst Denzel Sargent is just 4 points off third.

Cadet 12

Campbell Whelan tightened his grip on the Cadet 12 series lead with another win in the final. Whelan defeated Fletcher Bellars with Kaiden Ford taking third, a costly DNF in the final for Jesse Keeling has almost ruled him out of the battle for second in the series.

KA4 Junior Light

Yet again it was a dominating Tate Frost that clean swept the day and closed the points race down to just 23 points. After missing the opening round Frost has won every race on offer. The title will come down to the last round at the Launceston Kart Club with 4 drivers covered by 23 points. Logan Dixon heads the list with 263 points from Evan Chivers (261), Tyson Phegan (258) and Frost on 240 points. On the day Dixon picked up second with Chivers third.

KA4 Junior Heavy

Brock Lamont headed into the final with a clean sweep on his mind after dominating the class all day, but a mechanical issue with a moving axle robed the STKC member of a well-deserved victory. This allowed series points leader Connor Griffin to take yet another round win and stretch his lead over 2nd placed Jesse Sheals with Kyle Love coming home in third.

KA3 Junior

Tate Frost claimed his second race victory on the day with a win in the KA3 Junior final. Series leader Jackson Callow came second with local Harry Ward third after a tough last lap battle with Callow.

KA4 Senior Light

Gemma Wyllie and Bodie Reading were the class acts in this class with some very spirited and clean racing throughout the day, Wyllie taking all the wins on offer and now has a commanding 61 point advantage going into the last round, third on the day was the much improved Ellis Dickenson who now sits third in the series.

KA4 Senior Heavy

Whilst not having the number of competitors to validate a class for the statewide series the chequered flag was taken by Andrew Walter with Phil Isaac 2nd.

TaG Restricted Light

This may have very well been the race of the day, with 5 competitors all with a chance of winning the final with around 5 laps to go. Young Hobart driver Jacob Costello lead the group with Nicholas Walpole, Ryan Jenkins, Brodie Sward and Andrew Lee all on his tale. The battle was intense and clean with Costello able to hold out Walpole for the victory with Lee coming home in third, the series points standing is very close with Walpole holding a 2 point margin over Lee, with Jenkins third.

TaG Restricted Heavy

Whilst the action was good at the front of the race in the light class, the heavy boys were also having a ding dong battle of their own. Troy Sheahen, Jason Close, Shane Stonehouse and Abram Manion were nose to tail for the majority of the race with anyone capable of winning, in the end Jason Close got the win from Sheahen with Manion claiming the last spot on the podium. A couple of DNF’s for Brodey Lovett has dropped him out of title contention with Close and Sheahen separated by only 13 points heading in Launceston.

KA3 Senior Light

Another class that did not have the numbers to have its point count for the statewide series was KA3 Light, on the Day Shane Bray took the win from Tabatha Badger and Nicholas Walpole.

KA3 Senior Heavy

Jonathan McDonald made a welcome return to karting for the year and took 2 heats and the win in the final from Lachlan Newman and Brad Danrell.

KA4 Masters

The final of the masters was another ding dong battle with the ever green pair of Scott Hildyard and Shane Burdon going toe for toe. After splitting the heat win the two shaped up for the final and didn’t let the crowd down with some very close racing, Hildyard took the win in the end from Burdon with Anthony Butler in third. Hildyard has an handy 46 point lead over Burdon with Kerry Beechey 31 points back in third.

KA4 Masters Super Heavy

With only two competitors lining up for the big boys no series points were on offer but that didn’t stop Scott Wrigley clean sweeping the day ahead of Terry Pinfolds.

TaG Light

Another classic final played out in the premier class of the day with Nathan Zuj and Jacob Sale the stand out performers. The final was a cat and mouse affair with Zuj shadowing Sale for the entire race building up to the final laps, but Sale had the pace to prevent any real challenge that Zuj had in store, third on the day was Evan Livingston who for once had a trouble free day. The series will go down to the wire at the Launceston Kart Club with only 11points separating Zuj (309) from Jade Waddington (298) with Mitchell Lovell third on 202 points.

TaG Heavy

Alastair Lee had his best racing weekend of his career to date with a clean sweep of wins in qualifying, heats and the Final. Lee was untouchable with consistent pace that match some of the light competitors. In the finish  Lee took the win ahead of fellow LKC drivers Troy Stone and Dillon Van Galen. The series championship looks like going down to the final round with Lee 30 points up on Stone with Van Galen a further 27 points back in third.
