Triple Crown Double-Header

The 2016 Triple Crown Series raced into action on Saturday 10 September at Keilbach Park Raceway in Mackay.

The weather was not looking promising with a few early morning showers and heavy black clouds all around the track. Luckily by the time qualifying got underway the track had dried, but conditions were still quite cold so grip levels were low.

The Cadet 12s didn’t seem to mind and were all out to win which showed in the closeness of the times in qualifying. Mackay driver Max Deguara (top qualifier) and Dylan Le Garde locked out the first 2 positions all day, with Max finishing first in all the races except the pre-final (which Dylan won). Four of the remaining five drivers managed to bring their karts home 3rd throughout the day.

Round 2 the next day at the Whitsunday Motorsport Park, Proserpine, was a different story for young Max - he and his dad just couldn’t get the setup quite right, unable to catch the Cairns boys Aidan Beach and Seth Chellingsworth who shared the winning during the day. Max had to settle for seconds and thirds, but he still managed to amass enough points over the 2 days to be leading the class by a healthy margin.

The Cadet 9 drivers had more than each other to watch out for on Sunday during one of their heats. They all had to contend with a large carpet snake that had made its way onto the track! Luckily all drivers and the snake made it to the end of the race unscathed. There were some puzzled dads wondering why the drivers were taking such an unusual line around the corner, all was revealed when they returned to the grid wide eyed and jumping out of their skins!

Declan Fraser from Whitsunday club had a perfect weekend in KA3 Senior Light, top qualifying both days and winning every race, his speed was a class above.

Robert Thorburn also from Whitsunday club was running a little heavy for the class, but still managed to finish 2nd on a number of occasions. His final race was a letdown unfortunately with mechanical issues leaving him on the sideline after the rollup lap.

Nicholas Garioch made the most of his home track advantage on Saturday in Mackay, qualifying behind Declan and being the best of the rest with a clutch of 2nds. He wasn’t quite on the money Sunday, but still did enough to be second overall in the points so far.

The final round in Townsville on Saturday 29 October should be a cracker.
