KA Australian Speedway Kart Titles

from Victor Maastricht 22 September 2016

Central Coast Speedway Kart Club hosted the 2016 KA Australian Speedway Kart Titles on the weekend of September 10-11 in front of a huge crowd and with good fields of drivers entered in all classes. Davistown RSL was our major sponsor for the event.

The weather once again played its part, with some last minute rain on Saturday morning, which ended up delaying our start by about 2 hours. However, this didn’t dampen anyone’s spirit with everyone eager to get going once the track had dried sufficiently.

The racing format for Saturday was a combined Carby session with 3 random drawn Heats. Then for Sunday was a last chance Heat, with lowest heat point scores off the front, followed by the Finals after lunch, with gridding based on highest total Heat points to the front.

Once the weather cleared we had two beautiful days of sunshine, and we had all drivers anticipating some great results. Many of the reigning champions were also vying to uphold their 2015 Aussie Title crowns.

The first class to run for the weekend was KT Modified Light. This was a hard fought class, with Bailey Goodwin, Brad Cunneen, Mitch Brien and Dan Morris all taking out Heat wins. However it was Brad Cunneen who managed to find his way to the front in the Final and retain his KT Modified Light Title from 2015.

  • 1st Brad CUNNEEN, 2nd Timothy BEATTIE, 3rd Daniel MORRIS

Next up was the KA4 Junior Light class, which was one of the bigger classes of the weekend. Lots of young talent and experience was on display, with some great racing and passing moves. The heats were won by Brayden Shute, Luke Geering and William Millerd-Stevens. In the first heat, young lady racer Holly Cady was involved in a coming together with another kart and finished with a roll-over. She was conveyed to hospital as a precaution, but was back later that day all ok, with nothing but damaged pride !

  • 1st Luke GEERING, 2nd Brayden SHUTE, 3rd Andrew SAYRE

Incredibly, the top3 result for KA4 Junior Light & Heavy classes was identical - Luke Geering 1st, Brayden Shute 2nd and Andrew Sayre 3rd

This meeting the Cadet 9 class was run for the first time as an Australian Title. It was a smaller field of quite experienced young drivers. The heats were dominated by Kaylan Styles taking out 3, with Luke Angilley winning the remaining. In the Final Kaylan was leading from the outset, however an incident passing a lapped kart, saw him spin causing a yellow and a Rear of Field for the restart. He drove brilliantly to fight his way back to 2nd place, however was unable to catch Luke in the remaining laps.

  • 1st Luke ANGILLEY, 2nd Kaylan STYLES, 3rd Mark ANGILLEY

The KA3 Senior Light class started with Jake Baines as one of the favourites and he didn’t disappoint, especially after winning two of the heats. Bailey Goodwin and Kyle Mock were also in great form all meeting, with Kyle also winning the other two heats.

  • 1st Jake BAINES, 2nd Bailey GOODWIN, 3rd Kyle MOCK

The KA3 Masters (Over 40s) class was up next, with Matthew Elliott the defending champion back to try and retain his crown. Anthony Ball started the meeting by winning the first Heat, but after that Matthew claimed all the remaining heat wins. In the Final he wasn’t headed to retaining his Aussie Title crown. Nathan Reid ran fairly consistent 3rds all weekend to complete the podium positions.

  • 1st Matthew ELLIOTT, 2nd Anthony BALL, 3rd Nathan REID

In the Cadet 12 class, James Angilley was the reigning champion, but in a tough field it wasn’t to be this year. Jac Laneyrie has been an in-form driver the last 12 months and grabbed one heat win, with Max Bevan, Nathan Thompson and Rhys Birkett all grabbing a heat win as well. From all the heat results, Max was then off pole for the Final, and was never headed to become the 2016 Aussie Title holder.

  • 1st Max BEVAN, 2nd Jac LANEYRIE, 3rd James ANGILLEY

The KA4 Junior Heavy class was contested by a small field of in form drivers, with some great nose to tail racing and some of the best starts of the meeting in tight packed formation. Brayden Shute won one heat, but it was Luke Geering who was the dominant driver winning 3 of the heats, and after winning the Junior Light Title, he stretching out another lead to also win the Heavy Final.

  • 1st Luke GEERING, 2nd Brayden SHUTE, 3rd Andrew SAYRE

The KT Modified Heavy class was another tough field of competitors, with Chris Keppie, Max Risbridger and Royden Alcorn taking a heat win each. However, in the last heat and Final, Peter McKenzie started showing his form, taking out the Title this year, improving on his 3rd place a year earlier.

  • 1st Peter MCKENZIE, 2nd John WATTON, 3rd Christopher KEPPIE

The last class of each round was KA3 Senior Heavy. This was the biggest class of the weekend, and as such getting maximum points in each race was vitally important. Steve Hosie, Wayne Hosie and Ryan Smith each won a heat, however, all also had a DNF affecting their points tally. Only Matthew Elliott and Anthony Ball finished all heats, after other drivers various incidents and mechanical issues. This gave them the front of the grid for the Final, which Matthew didn’t let the opportunity pass taking out his second Title for the meeting.

  • 1st Matthew ELLIOTT, 2nd Ryan SMITH, 3rd Anthony BALL

Congratulations again to all the podium winners, and to Matthew Elliott and Luke Geering both taking out two titles apiece, and a big thanks to all our Volunteers and Officials who helped in the setup and running of the meeting. It was a big weekend !

Our next event is now Club Championship Round 7, a Twilight meet on Saturday 15 October at Gosford Showground. All details can be found at www.ccskc.com.au
