Victorian Superkarts, Round 2

from Rolf Greve 15 March 2017

Round two of the Victorian Superkart series headed down to the famed Phillip Island Grand Prix circuit under the threat of some changeable weather conditions as is the norm at this coastal circuit anytime of year.

While the clouds did hang around they held off depositing any significant rain which made for a fine if somewhat humid day of competition.

For the 250 International class it was really Jamie Macdonald’s day taking out three of four race wins ahead of Brayden Bailey who had his first drive of a twin handing over his non gearbox kart to Gary Pegoraro.

South Australian Matthew Ramsden came over to dial his new kart in and finally found form in the final stopping Macdonald from making it a clean sweep.

In his final appearance here on Oz, Liam Morley from the UK wanted desperately to go head to head with local champion Jordan Ford, however mechanical gremlins foiled his master plan. All the Nationals had some sort of issue which allowed Ford a clean sweep for Team Williams and even finishing in outright first place in all four heats.

125cc Gearbox was a mixed bag of results, Gardner starting well early in the day, Lawrence starting poorly but ending strongly, Stebbing having issues, Filliponi holding on for the spoils while newcomer Bradley Tremain also hung in there with solid results and took the day on debut driving a KZ2.

The Rotax Lights ware amazing with Occhipinti hunting down the faster Stock Hondas to give him some breathing space from a very determined Sonny Perera. 250 Inter driver Gary Pegoraro stepped into Brayden Bailey’s kart and found the going tougher than he thought,  to bring in a second in the final behind Occhipinti.

In Rotax Heavy it was to be current driver of the year Jarrod Sanfilippo with a clean sweep and rounding out the podium with a Team Williams podium in Darren Ridd and David Murphy. Club President Rod Clarke chased hard all day but could not match the off corner speed of the front three.

The Stock Honda class again provided the best of racing with karts going four and five wide to the strike. In four heats of racing we had four different winners - no one can say this class isn’t competitive. And best of all it is cost effective.

To see these guys shake hands and say what a great race after each heat shows just how good this class is. Tim Clarke took the win at day’s end ahead of John Connelly and Kieran Morley.

The next round of the Victorian Club series is at the Broadford road circuit on May 7. Why not drop in for a look and see what Superkarts are all about?
