Behind the Winners For National Breast Cancer

press release 4 February 2013

After 7 years, the annual LADIES ONLY race meeting run at the Lithgow circuit in New South Wales by the Combined Districts Kart Club in aid of the NATIONAL BREAST CANCER FOUNDATION, has now been awarded a NATIONAL Status and therefore the PINK PLATE is now even more a very sought after prize.

However, there is a lot more to this great event, an event inspired by members of the Karting fraternity that have been involved with this dreaded condition on a first hand basis, and many with intimate knowledge of the trials and tribulations that effected people, both Female and Male have to endure if they are to survive.

At every meeting the gathered people receive at first hand the real truth of this condition and what people go through by a guest speaker from the National Breast Cancer Foundation, always someone that has been effected by the condition and are now on the way to recovery.  This year Donna Crebbin held everybody in awe, and some with a tear in their eye, as she detailed her experience and congratulated all those involved in making this meeting the success it has always been, and continues to grow every year.

Belinda Colombrita took charge of our annual PRINCESS Competition where a group of young ladies worked as hard as they could to raise as much money as possible for the cause, and with the title of “EVENT PRINCESS” on the line the young girls do an amazing job. This year Stephanie Colombrita was crowned PRINCESS with Kiara Beattie as her Second in Charge of the princess duties.

The final dollar count is not yet completed but with the Charity Princesses raising some $17,000, with the Tasmanian Girls supplying over $4,000; plus auctioneer Craig Harradine adding just on $7,000.  From all present at the Saturday night auction, this year’s event is well on the way to adding almost $20,000 to the already $100,000 that has been raised by this event.

The Saturday Night “Gathering” is a triumph for our Canteen Girls who fed no less than 180 people with a full hot Spit Roast meal, and delicious sweets that tempted even the sincerest dieter! It was here that our Breast Cancer Representative presented her address, which really did bring the message home, and auctioneer Craig was turned loose to extract dollars by way of the auction for a large range of goods that were supplied free of charge by a whole range of sponsors.

Every year the racing is absolutely on target and fabulous, with no quarter being given by anyone, all the Ladies really do appreciate the competition amongst themselves, and do have a real purpose in supporting a charity that they can really relate to.

Competitors from every state of Australia, except South Australia, made the effort, even from across the “Ditch”.  Ladies from New Zealand have, in the past, come to give the “Big island” ladies a real tussle.

Every year a little special group goes that extra mile to compete and this year the Tasmanian girls deserve all the praise for their huge effort to get, not one, but in fact a whole team of girls, drivers, mechanics, support crew, and others to the event.

Not only did they work their hardest to raise the money to cover the trip, (selling chocolate they tell me?) they finished up with $4,000 more than they needed and proudly added that to the donations for the Breast Cancer Fund.

This event is officiated by a full team of Lady accredited AKA Officials, and this year under the direction of Chief Steward Marta Laybutt they did a marvellous job that saw the event run smoothly and appreciated by all who raced.
It was interesting that while the chief technical officer, Les Allan is certainly not of the female variety he was made to wear a pink TU-TU which someone paid $500 to see him keep it on all through the meeting, Les being the good sport that he is happily obliged. (Photos are available for a fee!!!!)

The Combined Districts Kart Club, and everyone of its members who really did provide their time and energy for this event can be very proud of their efforts; there is absolutely no doubt that this event will grow and grow while ever our sport continues, and the event will always have a place in the hearts of all those who participate for a cause that they can relate to and a condition that they want to see defeated.

And finally congratulation to all those who competed and those that won or filled the minor places, in particular Alexandra WHITLEY who really does appreciate winning the major award the Nichol Franks trophy.

We can assure you that the Combined Districts Kart Club is ready to do it all again next year, and we hope that we see you all back again next year.

Max Laybutt.
