Victorian Superkart Series - Round 1

press release 10 February 2013

The Victorian Superkart Club kicked off it’s 2013 season with round one at the newly resurfaced Phillip Island Grand Prix circuit. The race surface is now billiard table smooth and once a few categories have raced there we’re bound to see a few new lap records.

A fantastic field of forty two entrants turned out to greet the starter which shows an increase in Superkarting participation once again. Many of the 250 twin machines were using the day for a final shoot out before Round one of the Australian Championships in March at Sydney Motorsport Park.

In the 250 twins it was a very fast Gary Pegoraro who led the field in each heat before retiring saving the data and machine for March. Russell Jamieson headed down from Queensland for the weekend but was plagued with issues. Matt Bass, having his first drive of his Wizzer prepared inline BRC, also showed great speed and promise along with Kristian Stebbing. In the end it was Martin Latta who made the best of it taking out the day ahead of Stebbing and the returning Anton Stevens.

In the single cylinder 250’s it was a mixed bag of results with each entrant having a set of issues to deal with on the day. Darren James was the man with pace while consistency paid off for Jason Akermanis. A DNF in the final cost Scott Appledore dearly.

The biggest field of the day was the 125 gearbox class with 16 entrants. Rod Conn drove away for a four from four result with Gary Haywood, Sam Zavaglia and Robert Xerri being the other hot performers. This class is also seeing the emergence of a “Stock Honda” variant which is very popular in the USA. The reliability of this class is amazing yet with no real performance disadvantage, proven by Sam Zavaglia who finished in second place driving his Stock Honda.

The non gearbox classes (Rotax) saw the most entertaining racing. In the lights it was last years driver of the year Russ Occhipinti clean sweeping the day. Last Years Junior winner Tim Clarke started the day well but was stumped with chain issues in the other heats and wished it could all be done again. Frank Arlacon, Fabrice Boroni and Tom Cooper all had their moments in the sun.

Back further in the heavies Alan Dodge had a clean sweep however Rod Clarke made him work hard for every win with some of the closest finishes seen. Also from last years junior Championships Jamie MacDonald stepped up to the seniors and had a consistent day to finish third. New to our Junior ranks this year Tyler Williams made his season debut honing his skills for the Junior State Championship which will kick off in May at Winton.

  • Now in it’s fourth year the Junior State Championship can accelerate your path in motorsport. The series entry fee is $950. Your entry fee INCLUDES: Entry to four rounds of the Championship, One set of Dunlop slicks, and your CAMS licence. With great prizes on offer the series is sure to be a hit again this year. Round two for Superkarts will be held at Winton Motor Raceway on April 13, spectators are most welcome and entry is free.
