Victorian Superkarts, Round 4

  17 June 2013

Superkarts returned to the Phillip Island Grand Prix circuit on June 15 for some great racing action. Once again the big banger 250 Superkarts were thin on the ground with a few retirements due to engines and gearboxes giving under the strain.

Matt Bass was showing great form early in the day taking some easy race wins away early until his gearbox sidelined him for the last two events. Gary Pegoraro was in great form and making it look easy, however Gary was in test mode and withdrew from the official competition.

The 125 Gearbox and Non-Gearbox events were where all the action was. In the gearbox class it was Rob Millar who took the honours being just too quick for Sam Zavaglia from NSW. Also making a return to Superkarts after a long absence was Ben Castles driving the gearbox kart of Greg Bass for the first time and showing he’d not forgotten any of his race craft.

In Non gearbox Light, Tim Clarke was showing great speed making the day a bit harder for the normally dominating Russ Occhipinti. Both were trading race lead in each heat and were cutting up the lap record between them. In the end it was Tim Clarke who set a new bench mark time of 1 min 55.4141 seconds against Russ’s time of 1 min 55.5244. Fabrice Barroni rounding out the podium at the end of the day with a consistent run.

The NGB Heavies provided some great close racing throughout the day, Alan Dodge travelled down from NSW to have a crack at the locals and once he got a handle on the new surface dominated the day. Last years junior racer Jamie MacDonald is also coming to grips with his new kart finding some great speed and skill while Peter Strangis found he had some challengers to contend with.

The club was also happy to host junior Queensland superkarter Quintin Slabbert. Unfortunately we had no other juniors present on the day for Quintin to match up to but either way it would have ended the same. Quintin drove extremely well charging through the slower NGB light guys but couldn’t find the legs to join Tim and Russ belting away at the front.

Quitntin also broke the current lap record for NGB Juniors with a time of 1min 58.8128.

The next round will be held at Calder Park on July 20th and we invite Rotax drivers to come along and see what Superkarting is all about.
