Two Days of TEKA At Griffith

from Justin Sydenham 22 August 2013

Griffith – Cracking day, Arvo beer, Twilight race…and donuts!

Worth the drive absolutely! I’m sure all would agree that this beautiful track with it’s free flowing layout, smooth surface, and more than hospitable people delivered all that was expected, and if you’re Rubber Rooster Racing much much more!

If you haven’t heard Rubber Rooster Racing had a crazed fan go wild and break into their room in the middle of the night just to catch a glimpse of the trio, and the possibility of an autograph…or was it a copy of Linton’s new album she was really after? Either way she won’t do that again. Thanks for the laughs boys..

Above: The #50 Bullitt team would claim a win on Day 2

Friday, cool but pleasant with the usual early birds already there and enjoying some track time and a little socialising before the weekend got serious.

Saturday looked like it was going to be a perfect day, testosterone (and pheromone) were high as karts anticipated the opening of the gate. Kart #27 went sub 43 seconds on lap 17 and wouldn’t be beaten, but the kart to make a statement outside the regulars at the top of the time sheet was Bullitt #50, only just over a tenth of a second behind. Mad Racing #88 and Red Baron #94 split by a hair, the top of the B grade teams. PCR #95 also looking like they’d come to BOOGIE just behind, and ahead of some notable A graders.

Newcomers Lifestyle Autos #70 were the surprise team, setting fastest practice times in the Hondas! Superteam CDT arrive with their usual support crew with #45 being the quickest of them.

Above: Day 1 winner, but a broken stub axle on day 2 for Murphy Bros.

Qualifying was an exciting affair with Murphy Bros #71 taking pole over Aussiespeed #30 by 6/1000ths of a second. In B grade Red Baron’s testing and set up proving a winner beating Benders #22 home for top spot in B grade by a full second, with another half a second to Rubber Rooster #6.

Race 1 would be an interesting affair with the karts starting the race in the warmth of the afternoon sun and racing into the dark of night. If there was a fashion prize for best dressed (I mean presented kart) it would be Benders #22 lit up in all colours and directions, well done boys on a great outfit!

All teams seemed to adapt well to the conditions, but it was Murphy Bros relentless speed that couldn’t be beaten taking the win from Bullitt #50 who carried on from their fast practice session with a near perfect race. Looking after their championship hopes were Team Motorvation #17 driving well (and safely) into 3rd. The big hit (excuse the pun) of the day went to Aussiespeed #30 the Championship leaders, who through no fault of their own smashed their kart beyond repair. Boy oh boy this fight is far from over, with steady good performances from other title contenders.

In B grade Mad Racing #88 just too quick mixing it with the font runners taking the win, and finishing an exceptional 4th outright! Rubber Rooster #6 helping their Championship with a well deserved 2nd runner up.

In the Hondas Hellrazor #13 avoiding mechanical dramas just too quick and consistent taking the win! Newcomers Lifestyle Autos #70 gave notice setting the fastest lap in the run home to 2nd, big effort boys!

Day two, another spectacular day for the second race! Starting order would be determined by the finishing order in the previous race, leaving a couple of movers and shakers toward the back of the grid.

Not one, but a number of ding dong battles would ensue through the field and last for the entire race, unbelievably close!

With the ‘bad boys’ of the series Murphy Bros #71 out of the picture breaking a stub axle, and last round winners Custom Decals #34 suffering ongoing issues, Aussiespeed #30 wanted to make up for a DNF the day before taking on the speed of Bullitt #50 and the consistency of Motorvation #17 & 49 to lead on and off throughout the race.

Red Baron #94, Rubber Rooster #6, mad #88, and Benders #22 were never far apart, with only pit stops and strategies separating them.

HQ Racers #31 showed speed, Nuts & Bolts #93 home track knowledge, Hellrazor #13 and Christ Crew #3 were again playing nicely and couldn’t be separated, with Frog #11 and Hope to Finish #75 trying to deal with an insistent Lifestyle Auto #70.

Man, there were some close finishes….

After 279 laps the Odd Couple (and I mean both odd, not different to each other) who make up two thirds of an unusual team we’ve come to know as Bullitt #50 take a very well deserved win!! Happy with themselves?? An understatement of massive proportions! A mere 15 seconds behind and charging home in an attempt to res-erect their championship was Aussiespeed #30 who deserve a celebration after the day before.

Motorvation #17 make the podium and go a long way to building a claim to the series lead! Mad #88 and Rubber Rooster #6 (the epitome of cool, or atleast two of them are) drive home to 1st and 2nd in B grade, rounding out the top 5 outright (says a lot for what is apparently the lower of the two classes in Briggs….quality boys quality).

In the Honda’s, Hellrazor #13 anytime they make the distance are goin’ to be near the front. In this case they do and take the WIN! After some ups and downs, and close battles Nuts & Bolt #93 (I’m sure that’s not a reference to you know what?) drive into to 2nd place followed by Frog #11 who had one eye on the Championship.

Thanks to Griffith kart club and its members that so willingly helped out to make this such a great weekend of racing!

Based on the interest we’ve already received Canberra will be a full grid, and with a little socializing on the agenda in the heart of the ACT add it to your calendar asap!
