V8 SUPERCARS THIS WEEKEND, KARTING NEXT WEEKEND FOR CENTRAL VICTORIA

Motor Racing fans in Central Victoria are in for a real treat over the next fortnight.

This weekend the Winton Motor Raceway will come alive to the sound of V8 Supercars, while next weekend it will be the future generation of motorsport stars in action during the Rotax Karting Nationals in Puckapunyal.

Next weekend’s event is one of the blue-ribbon events on the Australian karting calendar with no less than 175 competitors from various parts of Australia and New Zealand set to line up on the grid across the six categories.

The three national championship categories – Rotax Light, Rotax Heavy and Junior Rotax – are the three largest fields with 45, 22 and 51 entries received respectively.

The 45-driver Rotax Light field is the largest of the category assembled for the annual event since the 2003 running in Newcastle when 62 drivers contested the category.

Included in the list of drivers for the Rotax Light field this year is reigning champion Pierce Lehane (Sydney, NSW), six-time champion David Sera (Narre Warren, Vic), New Zealand Champion Daniel Kinsman and 2011 KZ2 World Cup Champion Joey Hanssen.

Sunbury’s Matthew Wall will start as one of the favourites in the Rotax Heavy category, however, the reigning champion will face some tough opposition from the likes of Queenslanders Brendan Nelson, Kel Treseder and Matt Greenbury if he’s going to claim back-to-back crowns. All three drivers from the Sunshine State have enjoyed success at the Hume International Raceway previously and will be out to rain on Wall’s parade.

Other local hopes in the 22-kart field of Rotax Heavy will rest with the likes of Lee Mitchener (Greensborough, Vic) Troy Woolston (Ivanhoe, Vic) and Rick Pringle (Essendon, Vic).

With 51 drivers lining up for qualifying, the initial battle for competitors in the Junior Rotax ranks will be just to make the cut for the 44-kart grid in Sunday's final.

The strength of this field highlights the talent in Australian karting with no less than a dozen drivers deserved of the right to be classified as one of the favourites for the national crown. In the lead up to this event the likes of Joseph Burton-Harris (Sydney, NSW), Nicholas Andrews (Brisbane, QLD), James Abela (Sydney, NSW), Jordan Boys (Lavington, NSW), Liam McLellan (Melbourne, Vic) and Callum Walker (Brisbane, QLD) have all enjoyed success near the front of the field.

While not officially a national championship, also competing at the event will be the DD2, DD2 Masters and the one-make Sodi Kart Junior Rotax Trophy classes.

Practice for the 2013 Rotax Nationals will begin on Thursday (August 29) and continue on Friday (August 30) with qualifying and heat races on Saturday (August 31). The championship finals will be contested on Sunday (September 1).

The Hume International raceway is located on the Seymour-Tooborac Road, approximately eight kilometres west of Seymour.
