Singapore Karter Awarded Asia-Pacific KF Title

from CIK-FIA 19 September 2013

The first driver from Singapore to win the Asia Pacific Championship is Julian Fong Wei Jie, whose remarkable performances at Suzuka (JAP) put him out of range of his opponents after the cancellation of the second round.

The competition at Macau cannot be held because of an insufficient number of participants, so the final Championship standings for Asia-Pacific KF in 2013 are based on the results of the two races of the initial meeting on the karting circuit at Suzuka. The JAF (Japanese Automobile Federation) organized this beautiful event in May to celebrate 50 years of existence.

Julien Fong Wei Jie (Tony Kart-TM-B'stone) dominated the competition despite strong Japanese opposition. He first set the pole position lap and won with the heats with ease ahead of Ryota Kiyohara (CRG-TM-B'stone) and Arata Saeki (FA Kart-Vortex-B'stone). Takashi Kasai (Tony Kart-Vortex-B'stone) threatened Fong Wei Jie in Race 1, overtaking quickly and resistant to pressure until the end. Fong imposed his authority in Race 2 after a disastrous start for Kasai. With 45 points, the Singaporean Julien Fong Wei Jie becomes Asia-Pacific Champion, second is Arata Saeki on 36 points, and third is Takashi Kasai on 28 points.

Julien Fong Wei Jie is one of those young Asian motorsport enthusiasts who start karting at home then decide to come to Europe to improve their driving and race management with the top specialists. This is where he has built a reputation of being a fast driver in KF2 where he started to compete in 2011. After more than a season with PDB Racing on a Maddox-Parilla, he joined the Irish International team Kartronix with a more intense programme to give him skill and experience.
