Cocca & Co Strive For Phil Goss Memorial

  1 October 2013

The Launceston Kart Club this weekend will be holding the Noodle Box Senior National Feature which incorporates the Phil Goss Memorial race.

Phil was a dedicated member of the Launceston Kart Club who died in 2009. The club decided to remember him with a memorial race which is now in its fifth year. The memorial race, held over 20 laps, is for karters aged 40+.

This year local Launceston Karter Freddy Cocca will be attempting to add his name to the list of previous winners of 2009 Stephen Johnstone, 2010 Steve Crocker, 2011 Neville Young and 2012 Michael Vaughan.

Cocca however will face stiff opposition with defending champ Michael Vaughan, who is making a return to racing after a solid 2012 when he won the State Title as well as the Phil Goss Memorial. Others who will also be hard to beat will be Stephen Bricknell, also of Launceston, and Smithton’s Tim Hinds.

The winner of the Phil Goss Memorial race on Sunday will receive a weekend away at one of Tasmanian’s finest holiday and tourist destinations - Port Arthur. With the kind support of the Fox & Hounds Inn and the Port Arthur Historical Site, the winner will enjoy a weekend away to relax and take in the sites of this beautiful part of Tasmania. The prize included a night’s accommodation for two at the Fox & Hounds Inn (including a meal voucher) and a complimentary day pass from the Port Arthur Historical Site.

The feature races on the day will be Senior National Light & Heavy and Over 40’s pro and Super Heavy with 53 drivers entered in these classes.

Senior National Light could be won by a number of drivers with the only female in the field Gemma Wyllie from the North West Coast likely to battle it out with the Launceston’s Daimon Shelton, Hobart’s Bodie Reading and Turners Beach driver Kennan Slater.

Senior National Heavy also has a stella field with locals Zane Wyatt, Aiden Shelton, Jamie Bricknell and defending title holder Steven Wrigley all able to claim favourite honours. Over 40s  Super Heavy has a field of eleven drivers and there is one clear favourite in Perth’s Scott Wrigley who is coming off a clean sweep of wins from the last race meeting in Hobart. Wrigley cannot get complacent though, as a number of Launceston Karters are narrowing the gap including Allen Sheahen and John Lee.

The LKC is proud to announce that all entries received for the “J” Feature race meeting will go into a random draw for 10 accommodation and race entry packages worth $2500.

Each winner will receive a night’s accommodation for a family of four to be used during the 2014 Statewide Series. Circular Head Kart Club, North Western Kart Club and the Launceston Kart Club have kindly donated free entry to their Statewide Series meeting for the lucky winners. LKC will cover the cost of the three entry fees for the 2014 STKC Statewide Series round.
