DD2 Hits New Heights at Pro Tour Melbourne

press release 21 January 2014

As a marquee category in World Rotax racing, DD2 continues to grow within the Australian Rotax Pro Tour and this weekend’s Melbourne event is a clear display of this upward interest in the two-speed gearbox category with over 30 entries received, highlighted by a fleet of young guns looking to take it up to some of the most experienced drivers in Australian Karting.

Victorian Jason Pringle currently leads the Rotax rankings for DD2 going into the Melbourne event and based on past performances he will be amongst the toughest drivers to beat at his home track. Pringle will be among some of the experienced DD2 drivers in the field including; Troy Woolston, Lucas Ward and Brendan Nelson. Queensland’s James Macken returns to the seat in Melbourne and will be looking to work his way up in the points throughout the year.

“I'm very excited to return to the DD2 category in the Birel chassis this year and I'm looking forward to the challenges that lay ahead. As for this weekend I am very interested to see what the new surface is like at the Todd Road circuit and how it effects our setups and lap times,” Macken said.

Albury’s Jordan Boys took the win in DD2 at round one, and while he balances double duties again this weekend in Melbourne, the young gun will be looking to consolidate and push for success in both DD2 and Rotax Light as he strives towards a successful campaign in 2014.

"I would like to keep the momentum up from Albury in the Praga DD2 Kart and have another great round. I will be placing equal focus on the Rotax Light class and I will be hoping to turn my results around in that class and push hard for the win. It will be a challenge to again run two classes but I look forward to it and hope to push for some strong results,” Boys added.

Gold Coast’s Michael Fabri will be amongst a number of new drivers equally headlining the DD2 field in Melbourne including Bundaberg’s Mason Barbera and Victorian Rylee Walton. Recent testing for Fabri has shown a need to adapt to the new driving style in comparison to recent events in Junior Max, however the young Queenslander feels he is up for the challenge.

“I am really excited to compete at the Rotax Pro Tour this year. This weekend will be my first race in the DD2 and I am looking forward to it, hopefully we can bring back a decent result. The extra speed and braking performance in the DD2 is unlike Junior Max and this brings a whole new level of driving commitment that I will have to adapt to,” Fabri said.
