International Opportunity For Female Kart Racers

KA media 7 March 2014

The Women of Australian Motor Sport (WAMS) is calling for nominations from female kart racers across the country for an opportunity to compete in the 2014 CIK-FIA Karting Academy Trophy selection event.

All Karting Australia Female Members born between January 1 1999 and December 31 2001 have the chance to nominate for the opportunity to attend the event. It is at this event where one driver will earn the right to compete in the 2014 CIK-FIA Karting Academy Trophy with the backing of the FIA Women in Motorsport Committee.

The CIK-FIA Academy Trophy is a unique competition with all competitors using identical Parolin-FIM-Dunlop equipped karts, allocated by drawing lots and placed at the disposal of the participants. While being a genuine competition based on the usual format of international Karting events, the Trophy will be backed by an educational program for the drivers. This program addresses topics relating to safety, the code of driving conduct on circuits and the anti-doping policy all aimed towards building a successful generation of young karters and role models.

The initiative has the support of Karting Australia and the Confederation of Australian Motor Sport (CAMS).

“We see female participation as an important aspect of our sport and the opportunity for a young Australian female to compete for a place on the grid in the CIK-FIA Academy Trophy is a very attractive one,” said Karting Australia CEO Kelvin O’Reilly.

“I encourage all young female kart racers who are eligible in the age group to nominate themselves for the opportunity.”

One young Australian female from the nominations may be selected to attend a qualifying event with the date and location to be confirmed late March. Further information will be provided to nominated candidates as it becomes available.

“WAMS is really excited to have the opportunity to put forward one of Australia’s most talented young female karters. We know there is a huge amount of talent in Australian karting, as proven by our Junior Development Scholarship recipient who only narrowly missed out on selection for the same Trophy series in 2011,” said WAMS Vice Chairperson Samantha Reid.

“We are always looking for opportunities to highlight the successes of women in motor sport and will continue to throw our support behind development opportunities like the CIK-FIA Karting Academy Trophy. It is really important that young karters see that there is a pathway through Australia, internationally and all the way up to Formula 1.”

To ensure the best candidate is nominated WAMS has put together a selection panel with representation from both national bodies Karting Australia and CAMS. The best candidate, as deemed by the selection panel, will be nominated to the FIA.

All applications must be received by WAMS by close of business Wednesday 18th March 2014, with the successful applicant then notified by 26th March 2014.
