Preview: McDonald's Young Guns (& SWS Finale)

The Launceston Kart Club will hold the final round of the 2014 State Wide Series this weekend.

The meeting also includes the annual McDonalds Young Guns Race. This race has been won by a who’s who of talented Tasmanian karters over the years. The race itself is open to all junior drivers and is held over 20 laps at the conclusion on the Sunday’s race meeting.

Launceston’s Jackson Callow will be keen to add his name to the trophy, but will need to be at his very best to hold out Hobart gun Zevie Eisentraut who defeated Callow at round three of the series. Others in contention will be Jonah Slater, Lachlan Newman, Andrew Lee, Justin Murphy and a trio of Launceston girls in Kiana Toon, Caitlin Fitch and Tayla Heath.

There will be twelve class winners determined for the 2014 state wide series over the weekend races, with each class winner receiving a red number plate to carry for the next twelve months that signifies them as a series champion.  A number of Launceston kart Club members are leading the points standing going into the final round.

Westbury’s Tate Frost has a slender 3 point gap in Rookies and with 120 points up for grabs will need to fight hard if he wants one of the red plates on offer.

Jackson Callow leads the Junior National Light class by 23 points from another LKC member in Andrew Lee.

In Senior National Heavy LKC veteran and multiple state wide series winner Johnathan Males has a commanding 79 point lead and barring disaster should win title number 6.

Another LKC Veteran in Adrian Harper also looks set to win a red plate this time in the highly competitive over 40 pro class.

Allan Sheahan in Over 40 Super Heavy holds a slender 12 point margin over brother Troy, This could be an epic final round for the two brother with twelve months of bragging rights on the line brotherly love may go out the window in this one.

Nathan Zuj looks set to once again defeat the young brigade that comes along each year in Clubman light, going in to the final round with a 36 point margin over Hobart’s Brad Hobden.

Rounding out the local hopes will be Jairus Holmes who leads TAG Restricted Light by a mere 4 points from coastal driver Keenan Slater.

Racing will be on both Saturday and Sunday with full canteen facilities available for the spectators.
