Triple Crown round two and final

Mackay and Proserpine kart clubs hosted the 2nd round (Mackay) and finals (Proserpine) of the Triple Crown series over the weekend of the 10th and 11th May.

Round one was run in Townsville back in April, but due to the threat of a cyclone in the North the second weekend of racing needed to be postponed until last weekend.

Both clubs would like to thank all the officials that helped run the meetings, with special thanks to Clem Archer and Peter Thomas who made the trip down from Charters Towers to be at both race meetings over the weekend. Without these guys and girls none of us drivers would get to do what we love.

Now down to the racing which was exciting to watch, especially seeing the drivers adapt to the two different tracks. Mackay’s surface being concrete and a stop start track, giving  the local drivers a slight advantage and then the hot mix (bitumen) surface in Proserpine and its flowing nature, which caught some of the drivers by surprise. There was some head scratching going on all round the pits on the Sunday but in the end most got a handle on the track.

Sportsman Heavy was one of the best classes to watch, with Mackay Driver Bevan Garioch having to fight hard to be the overall class winner for the series. He was chased all the way by Adam Stroud who never gave up and managed to top Bevan in the Sunday final on home turf in Proserpine.

The TaG 100 drivers all from Townsville had a whole lot of fun during the series and even came down to Mackay for the Saturday April 12th race meeting which was to be the second round of the series but ended up being very wet and windy  due to the cyclone further North coming down the coast. Jeff Johnson (17) and Kieran Dan (79) can be seen here having to use all their skills on slicks in the wet, both sideways under full power coming down the main straight at the Mackay track.

Wayne Hall was lucky enough  to have his name drawn out as the winner of the Deadly Kart chassis, which was the major prize for all those that entered the series. A big thanks to Dave Sera and DPE Kart Technology for their support. Wayne’s looking forward to giving his new chassis a work out around the Townsville track and can’t wait to get back to Mackay and Proserpine for next year’s series.

The series was certainly a great overall success and had it not been for the unfortunate weather and consequential date change numbers were looking to be over 90 in total, in the end we had around the 70 odd that were able to compete at all three events, still better numbers than last year’s first time series. Here’s hoping 2015 is bigger and better again - see you at the track.
