Nepean, We’re Coming Back!

The New South Wales Speedway Kart Club will return to Nepean Raceway this weekend for round five of the club championship, celebration day. It has been a season hampered by wet weather so far. The club is finally hoping to run at the Nepean venue for the first time this year.

Kurri Kurri Speedway staged the last meet for the NSWSKC earlier on this month with close to 100 entries. Number will come close to that this weekend, as it will prove important for drivers because it will be their last chance to gather seat time before the club return to Kurri in three weeks for the running of the NSW State Titles.

All six classes will be racing this weekend over a four race format, three heats and a final. Trophies will be based on points so consistency is key. Last time out James Angilley claimed the win in Cadets but Sophie Coghlan was there the entire day. Both drivers will be quick once again. Throw in the mix, Jac Laneyrie, Brayden Shute, Taylor Blanch, Halle Boyd and Max Bevan and you’ve got one strong Cadets field.

Rookies proved to be one of the classes of the day at Kurri. A multicar fight broke out for the lead involving many key contenders. Zak Blanch walked away with the feature while Luke Geering was tough to tame earlier on in the day. Liam Walker surprised many with a tremendous day and will be looking to back that up come Sunday. Ethan Rietdyk, Connor Moreau and Caitlin Genner will all be up the front fighting for the heat and feature race wins.

Liam Camilleri stepped up into the Junior ranks this year and dominated his first race out at Kurri. Camilleri and his close friend Kaidon Brown were two of the stars of the show in Kurri, and will no doubt be fighting up the front on Sunday. The Sayre bothers were locked in a close tussle at Kurri as young Andrew Sayre has also made the step up from Rookies to Juniors. This year he’s giving older brother Luke a run for his money. Marcus Dumesny suffered some bad luck and will be looking to bounce back, whilst Jake Donaldson, Brittany Hickey, Kyle Mock, Jacob Wray and Taylor Coghlan are just a few of the Juniors that will be hunting down race wins.

The Clubman classes are always strongly contested at Nepean. Jason Woodward, in Clubman Light, is trying to make the venue his own this season, but will be challenged closely by a number of competitive drivers. Alana Onley put a feature win on the board for the women in Kurri when she dominated an all but crazy final. She would love to go back to back this weekend. Jake Baines will be one of the drivers hoping that doesn’t happen. He was locked in combat with Woodward for most of the day at Kurri, but will be hoping for a quick kart to claim the win on Sunday. Nat Genner, Luke Ward and Josh Heath will be looking for strong finishes this weekend and hoping to take the crown come Sunday afternoon.

Clubman Heavy had a strong turnout in Kurri. Up to nineteen drivers nominated which saw Wayne Baines run away with the final. Continual contenders at Nepean such as Les Green, Daniel Selmes, Matthew Elliot, Joel Robinson and Pete Styles could all figure prominently at the top end of the field.

Last time out KT combined drank too much red cordial before they hit the track. Close to twenty karts started the final, but with only two finished. Chris Heffernan claimed the win at Kurri ahead of Peter McKenzie. The order at the top will be wide open again this weekend with a large contingency of karts expected to nominate again. Last year’s Club Champion, Daniel Sayre, is hoping for a better day after mechanical dramas hampered his day at Kurri, so too for Brad Cunneen. It appears to be the battle of the families in KT this year. They include the O’Brien brothers, Shute Sisters, father and daughter combination of Dean and Katelyn Hickey and the father and son battle of Richard and Ayden Elliot. Which family member will come out on top this Sunday? Depending on numbers, the 125 class may also race this weekend.

Elders Real Estate at Penrith is the major sponsor for the day. They pride themselves on good old fashioned customer service with their strong sales and management team - www.elderspenrith.com.au

Racing will kick off at 10am sharp on Sunday morning. It’s $5 entry for adults while kids get in free. All canteen facilities will be open. You can find Nepean Raceway on Rickards Road, Castlereagh.
