McLellan Swaps Steering Wheel For Microphone

  26 May 2014

Mitchell McLellan was once the young kid who did some commentating for his old kart club at Rochester, in regional Victoria.

This year, he’s burst onto the karting scene undertaking numerous race commentary gigs under his ‘brand’ name, MMS Commentating (Mitchell McLellan Sports Commentating).

Mitch starting racing karts at the age of 12 in 2006 competing in Junior National Light and Junior National Heavy. He then moved to the senior ranks, racing Clubman Light for a short time before stepping away from the driver’s seat in the middle of 2010.

Although he stopped racing, he wasn’t able to stay away from the kart track.

He kicked off 2014 by doing the race commentary at Rochester when the club ran the opening round of the Golden Power Series in March.

He was back behind the microphone at the recent VKS round at Todd Road and has just landed the commentary job for the Queensland State Championships in July. He’ll also be the voice at the City of Melbourne Titles in August and the Victorian Closed Titles at South West to round out the year.

“This year has been such an amazing opportunity” he told KartSportNews.

“To have started the year with only one meeting at Rochester, and to then get so much support from all the clubs around Victoria has been great.

“Landing the State Titles in Queensland is a highlight” he added, saying the gig came about from people hearing him earlier in the year.

He speaks highly of the wonderful karting community around the tracks.

“The support from all the karters, pit crew and family around the clubs is such a motivating factor for me and I love the sport because of this type of friendliness.”

Mitch said he has no plans to race again.

“I'm loving the commentating. Commentating and media work in the motorsport or AFL field is what I would love to do as a career.”

Mitch will be the circuit commentator at the fourth round of the Victoria Karting Series this weekend at Pucka.
