Whyalla City Titles

The Whyalla Kart Club City Titles were held on the weekend of June 21 and 22. The meeting was a huge success for the club with 69 drivers attending the event.  The drivers included current and former State title holders, Festival State Cup title holders and a former National title holder.

Drivers and crews started to arrive on Friday afternoon to set up and get in some much needed track time in preparation for the weekend.  Being open the day before a big race event is one of the idiosyncrasies that attract drivers to Whyalla from out of town.

Local drivers also attended and set up their pit spaces for the weekend. Saturday morning came and bright and early all the drivers hit the track ready to get that last minute tuning done before the opening.

The Mayor, Jim Pollock, provided an inspiring speech and welcomed everyone to the track and Whyalla.  At the completion of his speech the National Anthem was sung by Rhiannon Butt.  This was a site to be seen with 69 drivers plus crew and officials all in the pit area listening to the Anthem being sung.

13 different races hit the track with 3 heats being held on Saturday and then the finals on Sunday morning.
The racing was close and over the weekend 10 lap records were broken.

The stand out classes for the weekend were the Junior National Lights and the Cadets.  Both classes had approx. 10 drivers with quick starts that had karts bunched up and jostling for that first corner dominant position.  However all drivers showed respect and maturity beyond their years and not a single kart was damaged in the start of each race.

The Whyalla Kart Club would like to that all of the sponsors for each of the classes and Darren Shaw Photography.
