Baines Family Motorsport - Australian Speedway Title Wrap Up

press release 16 September 2014

The Baines Family Motorsport Team headed to Gosford Showground on Saturday, 13th September, to contest the 2014 Australian Speedway Kart Titles 2-Day Meeting hosted by the Central Coast Speedway Kart Club.

It was another successful meeting for the Team - Jake competed in the Clubman Light Class, Wayne was entered in the Clubman Heavy Class and Tim raced in Speedway Karts Elite 125 Class.

The Clubman Heavy Class had a very tough field assembled and the racing reflected that over the weekend.  In Wayne’s first heat on the Saturday he started P8 and, on a very heavy track, made his way through to a 4th place finish.  Heat 2 was a P2 starting position and Wayne went on to win the heat comfortably. Things were going well for Wayne however  a Heat 3 collision on the start unfortunately caught up Wayne and he was recorded with a DNF and this hurt the points situation for him.

On  Sunday  Wayne had to come from P8 in Heat 4 and needed all the points he could get to help his final start position.  After 10 tough laps  he got through to 2nd ; now the question was where would he start in the final?

The grids came up and it would be P2 for Wayne beside defending title holder, Mick Saller. The 20 laps ran very quickly on a very fast track, at race end Wayne finished 2nd to Mick. The result saw Wayne rewarded with his 5th title podium in 5 attempts and he was very happy in such a strong field to take home a trophy.

During the feature Wayne set a new track record for the venue taking 0.419 off the existing time.

Clubman Light for Jake was just as tough with a field full of the sport's best up-and-coming talent .
Heat 1was the perfect start for Jake as he went on to take the win from P2. In Heat 2 Jake had to come from P8 and, on a track a little tough for passing, made his way to a 5th place finish. The 3rd Heat curse struck Jake as it did Wayne and after coming from P11 and making his way into 4th  a mechanical gremlin struck and recorded Jake with a DNF.

Overnight Jake kept composed and turned up Sunday morning ready to do what he could. In Heat 4, Jake had to do it the hard way, coming from P9, however with one of the drives of the meeting he managed a 2nd place finish after the 10 laps.

The grid for the final saw Jake and friend and rival Dan Sayre start P2 and P1 respectively. After 20 of the hardest fastest laps, Dan held off Jake to take victory and Jake (as did Wayne) finished 2nd . Again this was a credit to Jake having now had 4 title podiums from 5 attempts.

Tim came into the titles with high expectations after running well this season in the 125 Elite Class.
However, due to numbers, the Class was combined with the 0-100 Reed Valve Class to form a red- hot field of very fast karts.

The title attack didn’t start well for Tim - a broken piston ring in the first Heat unfortunately put Tim out of all his heats for Saturday leaving him on 0 points. However the motto for the Baines Family Motorsport Team is “Never Give Up “ and that’s what the Team did. Overnight Tim’s engine was stripped and rebuilt.  In the rebuild, the Team noticed a little damage to the piston but had no option to go with what they had.

Tim’s only finish for the meeting in Heat 4 was a 1st place however with no other points he had to start last for the final. To his credit, Tim drove his kart to the limit and, at one stage, took the lead  but as the race went on and the engine temp came up, the damage to the motor took its toll. Regardless of this situation, he was still able to come home in 2nd place .

The Team took 3 karts to the titles and they all came home with podium positions. Suffice to say that the Baines Family Motorsport Team was very satisfied with their efforts once again .

The Team's next appearance is scheduled for 28th September at Gosford for the Central Coast Speedway Kart Club’s Round 6 of the 2014 Club Championship.
