Tiger Kart Club's Have A Go Day 2014

by Sean Phillips 9 December 2014

The Tiger Kart Club’s end of year open meeting had a little something for everyone. The whole event is based around ending the WA karting year with lots of fun and high speed action.

The drivers get to test themselves on 3 different tracks ranging from the full 1020 metre CIK track to the 750m with the extended Hell Corner that seems to go on forever, and the final 450m tri-oval where NASCAR slipstreaming and super high speed action is the name of the game.

If that’s not enough then between each racing round you can put your family and friends in your kart (so long as it meets C-grade driver specifications) so they can “have a go” and see how much fun karting really is.

Have a go at how many people are having a go! "We are just under 450 members now" Tiger Kart Club's Media & Promotions Officer Sean Phillips informed KartSportNews. "The way the club is going at the moment we think we will hit 500 during 2015. Things are really going well and no doubt due to events like this where we actively support the opportunity for new karters to come and try out our great sport."

Just to top it all off our karting swap meet also features at this event making it easy for the many first time people trying our sport to pick up a kart ready to join in the fun next year...

This event really is a credit to the clubs foresight and dedication to doing the right thing for karting and boosting the participation rates of our sport for all of WA.

Racing on the day was action packed but also lots of fun with everyone driving in the spirit of the event, dicing hard but also giving racing room where required so everyone can go home happy.

Some of the standout races were in the 125R class where 24 karts put on a great show in all 3 races. The Open class featured just about every kind of high powered kart from twin’s with Rotaxes, X-30s and KT100's to KZ-3 6-speed missiles and even some KF-1 engine karts for good measure. Seeing these things run around the tri oval at speeds well over 130kmh was something to behold and had the crowd at the fence for the whole race.

The have-go-sessions were well organized and safely run with all drivers signing in and each kart checked to ensure it conformed to the regulations before leaving the grid. Thanks to Max Kilgallon who looked after the safety of all the drivers and their karts and to all the have a go participants for driving within their skill level and keeping it all on the black stuff.

Meetings like this don’t come together by themselves and special thanks must go to Paul Brophy who was the everywhere man all day making sure the event ran like clockwork. It was also great to see Simon Gwilliam considered by many to be one of WA’s best kart drivers once again doing his club duties and helping out on the day. Simon’s a great example to others who might think that putting something back into your club by doing your duties each year is a bit beyond them, no matter who you are or what your driving level everyone is expected to help out at least once a year.

Well once again the Have a Go meeting has rounded out what has been a huge year of karting in WA. Best wishes to everyone over the festive season, stay safe and see you in 2015 ready to do it all again..
