So close, yet so far…
A post race penalty has affected the podium placings for the Aussies at the SKUSA Super Nationals in Las Vegas.
After a fantastic battle for the win in KA100 Masters, Kip Foster crossed the line second to Canadian Pro Ben Cooper with fellow Aussie Mathew Waters having his best race of the meeting, placing third. However Foster was hit with a 5-second penalty for a jumped start, dropping the West Aussie to P7 and elevating Waters to the runner-up spot.
Despite the penalty, Kip said he was still super proud of the effort.
“It’s been an awesome ride and perhaps without a couple of small driving errors on my part, we may (have) worn the crown” he posted. “Losing is never easy but nowadays I can handle it especially when it’s to one of the best in the business.”
Foster was happy to have put on a good show and demonstrate that close, clean racing can be done.
“The race with Ben Cooper will forever be one etched into my memory for great reasons. The race craft and respect while pushing each other right up against the barriers was at times simply terrifying, but some drivers you can trust.”
Meanwhile, Sam Dicker sent it hard in the Pro Shifter final.
A crash at the start of the first heat threatened to put him into the Last Chance Qualifier race, but a solid run in a damp heat two saved him from LCQ carnage and earned a P34 start position.
Aided by turn one carnage (not unusual in Vegas!), Dicker was P20 at the end of the opening tour. He charged up the field over the 25-lap journey which turned into 10th place when the two leaders wiped out with two laps to go!
Daniel Vasile took the win (over Pedro Hiltbrand and Emilien Denner) in a star studded field that boasted some of the biggest names of KZ/Shifter racing from across the globe.
“We were flying, doing similar times to the leaders” Dicker posted. “We got highest positions gained and achieved my goal of top 10 in a field of 10 world champions.”
