WA Northern Zone - Round 2

press release

Saturday 26th of April saw Karratha hold the 2nd round of the Northern Zone series with around 60 drivers drivers coming from Hedland, Tom Price, Newman, Exmouth & Geraldton.

The day saw some fantastic racing with all classes putting on a good show. It was pleasing to see so many new drivers taking part - there were P plates everywhere.

The open class was first off the ranks and although light in numbers it was full of action. Phil Pitt couldn't be stopped and blitzed the field with his twin engined Azzuro. Filipe Lino driving his gearbox Tony Kart was second and Vic Watson, also in a twin engine kart, took third spot. Vic by the way is a young 60+and still mixes it with the younger drivers so never let age be a barrier to having fun.

Junior National Combined had these fearless young drivers driving nose to tail all day with the lead changing many times. Matt Smith got the better of them though, Ethan Barth came home second & Exmouths Aiden Passmore took out third position.

100 Medium had some hard driving with a few bingles along the way. Nathan Davis from Midwest edged out Karratha's Chris Smith for the top position. Hedlands Bryce Watson crossed the line for third.

Pro-Cadets was the class that really got the crowd going with these 7 to 12 year olds putting on some of the best racing of the day. Caleb Barth took out the day by just 9 points over Nick Rowe both from Karratha with Kieren Passmore from Exmouth 3rd.

100 Heavies was a bit light in numbers but Mark Polkinghorne put on a good show taking out the top spot. New drivers Kent Simon from Hedland and Tom Bingham from Karratha finished 2nd and 3rd respectively.

125 Lights showed why this is the fastest growing class in Australia, these karts have great power but the thing that really gets the nod is that they have a starter motor so its jump in press the button and off you go. Midwest driver Nathan Davis blitzed to take out first place, Newman's Vic Marwick 2nd & Hedland's Bryce Watson 3rd.

125 Heavy had Karratha's Eric Smith in his new Monaco taking out the honours from Midwest's Paul Clark and Newman's Garrie Walker.

Junior Clubman was the last class to take to the bitumen but these young guys put on some extremely close racing & were great to watch. Matt Smith again came home with the goods, Tom Price driver Ryan Brown took 2nd & Ethan Barth a close third.

Karratha Kart Club would like to thank all the sponsors & volunteers for the weekend - it's your help & generosity that made a great day even better.

The next Northern Zone meeting takes place in Newman on the 1st June. The next Karratha club run is Saturday 17th May with racing starting at 7pm. Anyone thinking of joining, come out and see why karting is such a fast growing sport.
