Speedy Action In Geelong This Weekend

AKA press release

Today’s V8 Supercar drivers may hold their allegiances on different sides of the fence between Ford and Holden but one thing is clear - karting is where all the champions started their motor racing careers.

Take the likes of the drivers who have won the past ten V8 Supercar championships, Garth Tander, Rick Kelly, Russell Ingall, Marcos Ambrose, Craig Lowndes and Mark Skaife, they all started their careers behind the wheel of a go-kart.

This weekend almost 300 aspiring kart racers will converge on Geelong’s Beckley Park International Raceway to compete in round three of the Victorian All Star Series.

Many of the younger drivers have ambitions to emulate their heroes such as Lowndes and Skaife. One such driver is Geelong’s own Jake Campana, who will compete in the Junior National Light category.

Campana will be joined on the track this weekend by fellow Geelong racers Christopher Halesworth, who will contest the Junior National Heavy class while Andrew Rae will also be one to watch out for in the elite Junior Clubman category.

Proving the sport isn’t just for the boys is Geelong youngster Maya McNamara. The fast femme followed her older brother James into the sport. This weekend Maya will compete in the Midgets category for drivers aged between seven and ten while James is racing in the next age group, Rookies.

“This weekend’s event will see people come from all across Victoria along with a number of drivers from interstate to compete at the event, it’s going to be one of the biggest races at our track this year,” said Geelong Kart Club’s Dominic Albanese.

The fastest category in action over the weekend will be the awesome Formula 100 category where drivers will reach speeds in excess of 120 km/h on the 758-metre circuit. This class will see some of the best drivers in the country competing as they contest round three of the Pettaras Press/Trans West Insurance Titan Formula 100 Series.

Racing will be held from 9am on both Saturday and Sunday with free admission for spectators. The Beckley Park International Raceway is located on Geelong Road, Corio (adjacent to the trotting track).
