Jake's Got His Sights Set On Number One

AKA press release

Bunbury youngster Jake Wright will be aiming to make it two state champions in the one household when he competes in the Smarter Than Smoking Western Australian Karting Championships at Perth’s Wundowie Raceway this weekend.

His older sister, Jade, is a two-time state aerobatic dancing champion but this weekend it is Jake’s time to shine as he chases his first state karting crown at only nine years of age.

Wright will be competing against 25 other competitors, all aged between seven and ten years, in the Midgets class at speeds in excess of 80 km/h on the kart track but the youngster says that he doesn’t get nervous before a race.

“I’m not nervous when I race, I wasn’t even nervous before my first race two years ago. I think Mum and Dad get more nervous than what I do,” said Wright.

“This weekend is going to be tough with a lot of fast drivers racing but I’m really looking forward to it.”

Throughout 2008 Wright, his father Jamie, a former motorcross star during his heyday, and Mother, Heather, have spent many hours travelling across the state to compete at different karting events in preparation for this weekend’s championships.

“We’ve done a lot of travelling this year for racing, we’ve seen a lot of different parts of the state that we would never have seen if it wasn’t for being involved in karting,” said Jamie Wright.

“We’ve been to places like Esperance, Lake King, Karratha and Kalgoorlie. We’ve had a lot of success and all the time Jake is learning more but the most important thing is that he is having fun while doing it.

Wright will be joined 32 other drivers, including six in the Midgets category, hailing from the Bunbury region in Perth this weekend.

A total of 269 entries have been received across 16 categories for the championships. Qualifying will begin on Friday followed by heat races on Saturday and the Championship finals will be contested on Sunday.
