Whitmore Captures NSW Karting Championship

press release

Although he wasn’t the fastest, he was the most consistent, and that paved the way for David Whitmore’s victory in the 2008 NSW Karting Championship over the weekend at Pacific Park International Kart Racing Circuit, Port Macquarie, in the Rotax Light class.

Adding to his National Junior Rotax and Queensland Championship in Junior Light success, Whitmore has now cracked it for his first NSW Karting Championship in only his first year as a senior and his very first Title as a senior competitor.

For Whitmore and many of his fellow competitors, he had never laid eyes on the Pacific Park International Kart Racing Circuit, but he remained confidence despite this disadvantage driving his # 57 Intrepid Go Kart.

In qualifying for the Rotax Light class Whitmore came out on top and recorded pole position and in his two heat races he struggled in the opening heat race to finish in third due to a slow start, while he turned things around in the second and final heat race and brought home a victory. Whitmore continued his good form during the pre final by finishing in second.

The final saw Whitmore start from the outside of the front row, and at the drop of the green flag he worked his way into an immediate lead and from there he was never headed. Helped along by the fact that he built up a solid lead from the get go, Whitmore was able to maintain that advantage by posting consistent laps over the 14 lap distance and also conserving his tyres, and at the fall of the chequered flag scored a commanding and well deserved victory.

“There was a bit of work to be done leading up to the final, and when the final we got it all together and took out victory, so I couldn’t be happier,” the 17-year-old stated.

“I managed to get away to a good start and left the rest of them to fight it out amongst themselves, and that gave me quite a handy buffer, and despite second and third place catching up to me they had used all their tyre grip doing so, and that allowed me to extend my advantage in the closing laps.

“I know that I wasn’t the fastest Kart out there on the weekend, but I was able to substitute that by posting consistent laps, lap after lap, and was no clearer example of that then my performance in the final.”

Recently Whitmore, who is this year running in the Aussie Racing Car Series in the CAMS Aussie Young Gun program, was announced at the state level CAMS Rising Star for 2009 where he will compete in either the Victorian or New South Wales Formula Ford Championships.

“It is a great honour to be named as one of the CAMS Rising Stars for next year and hopefully this can help me progress in my motorsport career,” he enthused.

“I’m very much looking forward to working with CAMS and the Borland Racing Development team next year, and I’m just very grateful for this wonderful opportunity to expand my career.”

Whitmore is next set to be in action for the fifth round of the Aussie Racing Car Series, his third appearance in the Aussie Racing Cars category, on the weekend of October 23 – 26 on the Gold Coast Street Circuit in Queensland.
