Zavaglia and Wayne Star at Laguna Seca

Australian Superkart racers Sam Zavaglia and Mike Wayne have filled the minor podium positions at the Superstars of Superkarts meeting at California's Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca.

Zavaglia set a new lap record as he chased home former World Motorcycle Champion Eddie Lawson for the win, falling just over two seconds short.

After qualifying in second position, Zavaglia, racing his factory supported Sam Zavaglia Racing Stockman MR2 Honda, chased Lawson and the top two raced clear of the field. Zavaglia set a new Superkart lap record for the famed Californian venue, recording a 1:23.636 lap time on the second last lap. By comparison the time is less than two seconds slower than Casey Stoner's MotoGP lap record.

Mike Wayne qualified fourth in the Advantage Fastener Specialists Stockman MR2 Honda, loaned from Sydney racer Terry Lancaster. Wayne fought his way past Reggie Brown on lap six of the 16 lap race which was held as part of the Monterrey Sports Car Classic, the final round of the American Le Mans Series.

Zavaglia has had little time to celebrate as he returns home to compete in the final round of the Australian Superkart Championship to be held at Mallala Motor Sport Park on the Shannons Nationals Motor Racing Championships program. Zavaglia sits in second position, 19 points behind series leader Darren Hossack.
