Highclere Hots Up For Tassie Titles

AKA press release

The North West Tasmanian town of Highclere (near Burnie) will come alive to the tune of kart racing engines this weekend (October 31 – November 2) when drivers come from all across the State and the mainland to contest the Tasmanian Karting Championships.

After winning the prestigious Masport Cup event held at the venue last month local driver Waylon Sims will lead the way for the Tasmanian drivers in this weekend’s Event. However, Sims will face tough opposition from a number of fellow local and mainland drivers in the battle for the top prize.

Sims will be competing in the highly competitive 125cc Rotax Heavy category where he will come up against fellow Tasmanians Aiden Shelton, Harley Aitken and Matthew Coates. Adding further quality to the field will be the current Victorian and New South Wales State Champion Rick Pringle.

Sims will also contest the Senior National Light category where the former two-time State Champion will be aiming to improve on his eighth place finish last year.

“I’ve done a lot of testing recently for both classes so I’m confident that I should have some good speed to be near the front but it is going to be very competitive in both classes,” said Sims.

“Rick Pringle has really been the pace setter across the country this year and I think he will be tough to beat. Harley Aitken will also be one of the guys that I’d expect to be close to the front of the field.”

Sims’ younger brother Jobe will also be competing at the Event in the Junior Clubman category where he will come up against the likes of Victorian stars Garry Jacobson, Jordan Nicolaou and Luke Rochford. Launceston-born Queenslander Chris Hays should also figure prominently.

Drivers as young a seven will be competing in the Midgets category with Wade McLean one of the locals who has been in good form of late.

In total there will be 180 drivers competing across 13 classes at this weekend’s Championships. It is the first time the North West Kart Club, the oldest kart club in Tasmania, has hosted the State Championships since 2004.

The HARDINGS HOTMIX Kartway is 770-metres in length and is located a few kilometres South of Burnie on the North-West Coast of Tasmania.
