Bricknell Ready For Double Duty

Young Tasmanian racer Jamie Bricknell will be doing double-duty this weekend, combining Sprintcar racing with karting. Bricknell's first speedway meeting of the 2008/09 season is at Carrick Speedway this Saturday and Sunday night - but he's also competing in the Tasmanian Sprint Kart Championships at Highclere from Thursday through Sunday.

One of the leading rookies in Australia from last season, Jamie Bricknell is really looking forward to the upcoming Sprintcar season in Tasmania and to also making a number of appearances on the mainland.

Highlights from what was an impressive debut season in Sprintcars after he had graduated from Go Karting included a podium finish in the feature race at Hobart International Speedway, a sixth place finish and the hard charger award at the Latrobe International Speedway World Series Sprintcar round, and a fourth place finish in the Tasmanian Series point score and also the rookie of the year honours.

Armed with a brand-new Maxim and freshly rebuilt PM Race Engines prepared 410ci Chev powerplant, Bricknell’s aim for his this coming season is to continue the learning curve and to build up more consistency, which he hopes will lead to some more podium finishes, and maybe even a maiden feature race victory.

“I had a really enjoyable first season in Sprintcars and the goal is to naturally build on that,” enthused the 19-year-old from Launceston.

“The experience that I have gained throughout last season will hopefully see me able to move closer to the front runners on a more consistent basis, which I hope is going to help me develop more as a driver.

“You never stop learning with Sprintcars, as there is so much to take in both as a driver and with the car setup, and that is one of the great challenges with the category and something that keeps you coming back for more.”

Another thing for the upcoming season that Bricknell is looking forward to is making some trips over to the mainland to try his luck.

“The plan at this stage is to contest the Kings Challenge and Grand Annual Classic, and maybe the Easter Trial on the mainland, and that is going to be yet another learning experience,” he said.

“It’s not going to be easy and those mainlanders are always tough when they come down to Tasmania and they will be no different when they are on home soil, but I know with the more experience that I gain, the better off I’m going to be.”

The first meeting off the 2008/09 season for Bricknell will be at Carrick Speedway this Saturday and Sunday night (November 1 and 2) and it is certainly going to be a busy weekend as he is also contesting the Tasmanian State Go Kart Title during the day from Thursday through to Sunday.
