Photos: Oakleigh's 50th Birthday Meeting

The 2008 edition of Oakleigh's Southern City Classic marked the 50th birthday of the Oakleigh (nee Dandenong) Kart Racing Club. The Saturday meeting featured a special function of past Oakleigh executive members which attracted various names from karting's illustrious past. A number of vintage karts were demonstrated and Don Smith (father of 'The Baron' Greg and Grandfather of Grant and Joel) had a fantastic arrangement of old karting engines dating back to the beginnings of the sport.

Above & Below: The Don Smith Engine Collection. Virtually all of these engines were highly modified by the owners for maximum performance. In the past, karting was much more of a 'mechanical tinkerers' sport than what it is today with all the control classes.
