The Karting4MS Team Relay Event featured drivers from a variety of karting categories beginning with the youngest competitors in the Midgets, aged from seven to ten years of age, through to the V8 Supercar drivers aboard 125cc TAG class karts.

Event Organiser Benita Spicer was delighted with the support shown by the motor racing community.

“When we initially came up with the concept the goal was to raise $50,000 towards MS while ensuring that the drivers and everyone involved had a great time in the process,” said Spicer, who was diagnosed with MS in early 2007.

“It was great to have the support of the V8 drivers, Network Ten’s Greg Rust and Channel Seven’s Daniel Gibson at the event. All of the karters really appreciated them taking the time out of their busy schedules to be a part of it.”

Howard Racing’s V8 Supercar driver Dean Canto, who developed his craft during the formative years of his career by racing around the Oran Park karting circuit, quickly adapted back into the swing of things behind the wheel of a kart.

“That was a lot of fun out there, it was great to get back behind the wheel of a kart around Oran Park and even better to know that we were all doing it for a great cause,” said Canto. “It’s been a while since I raced a kart around here, that was hard work doing 15 or so laps, a lot harder than racing a V8 to be honest.”

Fresh from testing a Honda Formula One car in Japan, WOW Racing’s Cameron McConville thoroughly enjoyed his time on the kart track, as did his Network Ten compatriot Greg Rust, who was steering a PCR kart provided by Steel Guiliana.

For the record, Rust won the battle of the media personalities ahead of Channel Seven’s Daniel Gibson.

While raising money for MS was the major focus of the day, the team led by Fujitsu Racing’s Development Series driver Damian Assaillit were the winners.
