Australia To Send Masters Driver To Rotax World Final

Australia will be sending an Over 35-year old 'Masters' driver to the 2009 Rotax MAX Challenge World Final. IKD announced last week that six Australians will be eligible for the next world final but today amended the structure of that six to include a Masters entry.

"Based upon huge feedback from competitors as well as the large number of Pro Tour registrations thus far for Over 35’s, IKD has made a slight change to the recently announced selection criteria for 2009" IKD said in a statement.

The National Rotax Rankings scheme will be used to determine the drivers that are offered the opportunity to compete. "At a date to be announced in 2009 (most likely the Monday following the Rotax Nationals) the top two ranked Junior Rotax drivers, the top ranked Rotax Light driver, the top ranked Rotax Heavy driver, the top ranked DD2 driver AND the top ranked Over 35’s driver will be offered the opportunity to compete at the 2009 Rotax Max Challenge World Finals. The drivers that compete in the DD2 class will be the DD2 driver and the Rotax Heavy driver. The Over 35’s driver will compete in the Senior Rotax class."

This will be the first time in several years that Australia gets to send a Masters driver. Australia has twice taken out the Masters division of Senior Rotax at the World Final. Darrell Smith took the honour (and 4th outright) in Malaysia in 2002 while Mark Wicks enjoyed success (and 8th outright) in Egypt in 2004.
