Karting Decisions From World Motor Sport Council

press release

Specific Internal Regulations of the CIK-FIA
New Specific Internal Regulations of the CIK-FIA have been ratified by the FIA World Motor Sport Council. They include in particular the integration of an Entrants’ representative and of a Manufacturers’ representative within the CIK-FIA Commission.

The CIK-FIA Commission’s preparatory work will be entrusted with two Working Groups (WG): a “Sporting Regulations - Calendar - Championships ” WG and a “Technical - Homologations - Manufacturers” WG.

The composition of the “Sporting Regulations - Calendar - Championships” WG will be as
follows:

- 1 President,
- 4 members from ASNs (National Sporting Authorities),
- 1 representative of the tyre Manufacturers,
- representatives of the 4 Entrants who have entered the largest number of Drivers in the CIK-FIA Championships.

The composition of the “Technical - Homologations - Manufacturers” WG will be as follows:

- 1 President,
- 4 members from ASNs,
- 3 representatives of the Manufacturers (1 for chassis, 1 for engines and 1 for tyres),
- representatives of the 2 Entrants who have entered the largest number of Drivers in the CIK-FIA Championships.

KF1 category in the CIK-FIA Championships
The current KF1 category competing in the World and European Championships as well as in the World Cup will be split into two classes, with on the one hand a simplified (and, therefore, less costly) “KF1”, and on the other a “Super KF” mainly aimed at Manufacturer teams and teams closely related to these Manufacturers.

The choice of introducing a “Super KF” meets a request from most engine Manufacturers and from the main chassis Manufacturers, who wish to promote a more liberal category used as a showcase and offering a technological platform. Only the external aspect of the engine, the dimensions of the cylinder capacity, of the stroke, of the bore, of the maximum revs, of the con rod centreline and the homologations of the carburettor and of the ignition will have to comply with the existing KF1.

However, the CIK-FIA has considered as essential for Karting to remodel the KF1 category by making it more affordable technically (slowing of engine development, better reliability, recourse to additional homologated elements such as the exhaust and the reed box, or introduction of a regulated combustion chamber volume).

“Super KF” and “KF1 will compete together in the CIK-FIA Championships, but a «CIK-FIA
Super Trophy» will be reserved for KF1.

Technical Regulations - Clutches
A single-type clutch for all KF engines has been defined by the CIK-FIA, for introduction in 2009. It will be a centrifugal clutch composed of a monolithic rotor with added friction material (except in Super KF) and a bell with standardised internal dimensions. All clutches shall be in direct drive (100% engagement) at 5,000 rpm maximum under all circumstances. A miniaturised data logging system allowing the control of clutch functioning is currently under development.

Homologation Forms
The Homologation Form of each KF engine will be split into versions specific to each of the three competition categories (KF3, KF2 and KF1). The Forms will be lightened and simplified, and only the metrologically controllable dimensions applicable to the category concerned will be retained. These clarifications and simplifications are aimed at facilitating the work of Scrutineers in the events and are the result of a unanimous request of KF engine Manufacturers.

Tenders
Within the framework of the invitation to tender issued by the FIA for the supply of tyres in some of the CIK-FIA Championships, the World Motor Sport Council has decided to designate Vega as exclusive supplier for the KF3 category («Hard» type compound) and Dunlop as exclusive supplier for the KF2 («Medium» type compound), KZ1 («Soft» type compound) and KZ2 («Medium» type compound) categories. Dunlop and Vega offer all tyres for free to each Driver in all the events, as well as money prizes and advantages to the best classified Drivers in each event and/or championship.

Within the framework of the invitation to tender issued by the FIA for the supply of carburettors in the CIK-FIA Championships, Cups and Trophies of the KF3 category, the World Motor Sport Council has decided to designate Tillotson as exclusive supplier. The carburettor supplied by Tillotson will be the following: Tillotson HW-10A (CIK-FIA homologation No. 6/C/ 15). The price proposed by Tillotson is 104 euros (inclusive of tax) per carburettor supplied at the venue of the events (96.80 euros inclusive of tax per carburettor collected at the factory).

2009 CIK-FIA Championships Calendar
The three events of the 2009 CIK-FIA European Superkart Championship have been designated:

Magny Cours/F (17-19 April),
Most/CZ (5-7 June)
Assen/NL (7-9 August).

The Organiser designated for the CIK-FIA European KZ1 and KZ2 Championship event originally scheduled for Mariembourg/B (14-17 May) has abandoned the idea of organising the meeting. Considering the economic context and the state of advancement of national Championship calendars, this event will be neither postponed nor replaced. The European KZ1 Championship will be held over the single event of Wackersdorf/D (25-28 June). Regarding the European KZ2 Championship, the cancellation of one out of the three initially scheduled stages will be compensated by the possibility for every Driver having participated in the two events to be eligible for the World Cup for KZ1 which will be organised at Sarno/I (3-6 September).

Specifications for kart high seats
On proposal of the FIA Safety Commission, the World Motor Sport Council has validated the specifications for kart high seats. These specifications are not constraining and independent from the CIK-FIA regulations, and they can freely be used by ASNs for their national categories and by service providers in the Leisure Karting field.

2009 International Karting Series
The World Motor Sport Council has approved the following International Karting Series:

  • Rotax Max Euro Challenge
  • Rok Cup International Final
  • Middle East Karting Cup
  • Trofeo Andrea Margutti
  • Winning Series Karting
