NKA Super Series - Round 1

press release

nka karting oran parkLast Sunday, participants and spectators saw a sensational start of the first round of the new NKA SuperSeries, held at Sydney's Oran Park Raceway.

With temperatures surpassing forty degrees, the sizzling exciting atmosphere produced by the brilliant racing and the general feeling trackside was matched only by the scorching and unrelenting heat of the sun. Despite the certainty of a sweltering summer day, ninety-four competitors arrived expecting exactly what they were granted: a fantastic day of racing at one of the country's best circuits.

The event introduced the 125cc Sport Class (involving karts with 125cc motors and running on MG Red tyres, pictured above). This novel class proved very popular, with twenty-nine entrants. These racers displayed some of the best racing showcased in Australian karting over recent years.

The midgets and rookies, too, performed extremely well, giving a demonstration of very close racing without a single instance of contact all day. Of particular note was the driving of Drew Friend, winner of the Rookies class, but also that of Isaac Vaccarella and Conner Hey, who closely followed him over the line.

There was also fantastic racing to be seen in the Junior National and Junior Clubman class races (even more impressive as the majority of entrants in these classes had not driven at Oran Park previously). The monumental surprise of the day was provided by Zoe Donnelly, who made the step from the J to the Clubman class to arrive over the line on pole for the final. She eventually finished third, behind David Towe and the Clubman Class winner, Bryce Davidson.

The Junior National trophy was taken - very closely - by Ryan Eldridge, from Zoe's brother, Corrie Donnelly.

The first Clubman class races of the series were of a modest size, but were yet another exhibition of outstanding karting. Very close on the track, there were a number of different Clubman winners on the day, with Mark Moore ultimately taking the first place, and John Mcllwhan and Sean Carrol taking second and third, respectively.

The high-speed Open Performance class presented some fantastic racing at over 170kmh on the Extreme Track. Daniel Orsini took the pole for the final from both the NSW champion, Joe Chetcuti, and national champion, Dean Starling, but eventually finished just behind Chetcuti, and followed by Dean Starling.

The Senior National class can be a relatively slow class, inasmuch as lap times go, but is always one of the most exciting to watch, especially with the involvement of such karters as Simon Bonello, Anthony Bradshaw and John Desisto. Simon certainly had his work set out for him if he wanted to be a challenger to the newly crowned National Champion, Anthony Bradshaw. However, he delivered, and took a narrow win over Bradshaw. Even closer were Bradshaw and Desisto. John Desisto sped over the line still millimeters from Anthony Bradshaw's crashbar in an exciting finish for the Senior National class races of the day.

Nathan Kuhlmann dominated the field in the Senior Supersprint 4s, with Rick Ward finishing a consistent day in second, and Rob Gillett ending in third.

Yet again, the Tag Yellows were particularly fast on the track and offered up a brilliant display of some quite dazzling racing, with one of the closest overall point scores of the day. Grant Gafa was dominant in two of his heats and, ultimately, in the final, but it was the DNF in the third heat that cost him the biggest trophy of the day, settling for third, behind Ben O'Brien. O'Brien tied for points with the trophy-winner, Michael Lia, who made an excellent start in his first race out of TAG Reds.

125cc Sport Class was highly competitive and by far the biggest of the day. Grant Gafa led the field of 29 karts to a well deserved win.  The racing was close from start to finish, in all the races.   Enzo Mendicino, Daniel Coe and Grant raced bumper to bumper in all their races without contact.  Fantastic racing all round. Grant was kept busy between races as he changed tyres in order to use the same kart to race in two different classes. His effort paid off, taking home 2 trophies. The lower tyre running costs and convenience of push button start engines, will see the 125cc Sport class gain popularity.

125cc Masters, a new popular class for the over 40s was dominated by Vic Roy. With an additional 10KG, he challenged the times set by Grant Gafa in 125cc light class. Vic, in possibly one of the drives of the weekend, beat home a fast finishing and consistent Joe Gauci in 2nd and Chris Green in 3rd place.

125cc Super heavy class was well supported with Shane Tate taking home the 1st place trophy from Mark Horsley.

Shane and Mark had smiles on their faces as they both won additional unexpected prizes.

The "best presented kart" trophy went to Mark. Mark's immaculate kart attracted attention to the stickers on his bodywork promoting KIDZWISH foundation - a foundation to improve the lives of less fortunate children.

Shane Tate displayed exemplary skills on a track that he not driven previously.   Driving in the 125cc Super Heavy class, his lap times were comparable to those in the 125cc light class.  Consistent, safe driving and improved lap times, earned Shane the "most improved" prize.

Pegasus Community Care as the major sponsor contributed thousands of dollars worth of prizes and to help keep costs down for members.

The popularity of the event was unmistakable with 300 entries over the three days. Karters appreciated the improvements to processes and rules which resulted in safe racing for the experienced drivers and newcomers alike.  Members have a direct say in relation to the direction of the Super Series. Some of the improvements already implemented are:

  • Grid positions determined by qualifying times
  • Recovery vehicle used to recover stalled karts
  • Lap times and point scores immediately available on “mylaps” - http://www.mylaps.com/results/showevent.jsp?id=386914
  • Choice of tyres in some classes e.g. MG Reds or Mojos in Sport class
  • Automated online event registration and management system

  • $25 for second race entry fee
  • Rules that contribute to a safe race environment

  • Arrive and drive sessions for friends and prospects
