Local Drivers Feel The Hype Ahead Of AKA Nationals

press release

Townsville kart racers are beginning to feel the hype around Australia’s most prestigious karting Event, the National Sprint Kart Championships sponsored by Yamaha, which will be held at their local track over next month’s Easter weekend (April 10-12).

A number of local competitors will take the opportunity this weekend to complete some valuable testing prior to the final shakedown meeting to be held at the Sun City Raceway in Bohle (just West of Townsville) next weekend (March 21/22). One such competitor is Kaydon Iverson.

With his father Alan a top line Formula 500 Speedway racer Iverson got the bug for racing at an early age and hasn’t slowed down since.

The teenager started his career behind the wheel of a racing kart at the tender age of seven and for the over the past 11 years has developed into one of Queensland’s top young drivers.

Iverson, 18, has been a placegetter in the Queensland Championships and in 2006 was running second in the elite Junior Clubman category behind James Kovacic, who captured the National crown last year.

With the benefit of taking on the best at his home circuit Iverson is aiming for the top at next month’s Event.

“This year’s Nationals is probably going to be the biggest meeting of may career so far, like all racers I’m out there to win but if I can finish inside the top five it will be a very pleasing result,” said Iverson.

“I’m racing in the Clubman and Senior National Light categories, the Clubman category is probably the toughest in the country and there are about 20 guys who can realistically win it.

“With the Event being held at my home track I feel as though it is a slight advantage, however, it is going to be far from easy. Just like the past few weekends, this Sunday I will be out at the track practicing in an effort to go faster.”

Along with Iverson a number of fellow North Queeslanders should figure prominently in the Clubman Light category at the National Championships including Lydon Dodge from Cairns and the Garioch brothers, Bevan and Nathan, from Mackay.

The Sun City Raceway, located at the Bud Hankin Memorial Park on Shaw Road, Bohle, has undergone some major improvements over the past few years in preparations for next month’s Event and is now one of the best karting facilities in the country.

Entries for the 47th National Sprint Kart Championships sponsored by Yamaha close next week.

The Supplementary Regulations for the Event can be found on the regulations page on www.karting.net.au (and in the KartSportNews Race Calendar page). These regulations should also be read in conjunction with Addendum #1, which can also be found on the regulations page on www.karting.net.au.
