Karting With A Difference In Forbes This Weekend

Kart racers from all across the state will be heading to the Forbes region to contest the New South Wales non-bitumen Championships hosted by the Forbes Kart Club this weekend.

Forbes driver Shayne Piper, who secured the National Clubman Heavy Championship last year in Tasmania, believes the lessons learnt on the 465-metre oil-sealed dirt circuit in Forbes have provided extremely valuable throughout his career.

“The Forbes track is a very challenging one and provides a driver with a lot of variations in corner types and grip levels,” said Piper, who will defend his National Title at Townsville in Queensland over the Easter weekend.

“My first ever drive in a kart was at the Forbes track and I also won my first State Title there, so I have some very fond memories of the place.

“It is certainly a place that has taught me a lot throughout my career and I’ll be using many of these lessons in my campaign at the Nationals next weekend.”

The Forbes Kart Club is one of the oldest karting clubs in the country and the only remaining oil-sealed circuit in operation across the country.

“Forbes has a long history with karting in Australia and racing on our track requires very little change between a kart that races on bitumen," said Forbes Kart Club President David Stibbard.

“Contrary to what many people believe, the karts actually don’t get dirty while racing on our circuit. It is a combination of oil-sealed dirt and concrete providing the drivers with a slightly different challenge to what they are used to.”

At this stage it is expected that there will be around 100 drivers competing at the weekend’s Event with the most popular classes being the Junior and Senior National categories.

“We’ve had a fair bit of interest from all over the state which is very pleasing, hopefully we will see over 100 drivers come to the event and enjoy the Forbes hospitality and challenge of the circuit,” said Stibbard.

Practice will be contested on Saturday with the Championships being contested on Sunday April 5 where a blue number plate will be rewarded to the winners in each category.
