For Belcher, who won the New South Wales State Title in 2006, this year’s Event presents the best opportunity for him to capture the prestigious green plate awarded to the Champions.

“While racing at your home track in a major event is always a bonus, I think that the local guys will have an extra benefit this year because the kart set up required in North Queensland appears to be different to anywhere else in the country,” said Belcher.

“Normally at a Championship down South I’m chasing the perfect set up for the majority of the weekend but I’ve been doing a fair bit of testing at the track recently and am confident of a good result.”

Belcher’s first tilt at a the National crown came in 2003, four years after he followed good mate Damien Caddies into the sport to start his karting career.

“Damien was racing karts and it seemed like a bit of fun, so I convinced my parents that it would be a good thing and the rest you could say is history – including my first race,” said Belcher.

“My first race was a little bit of an embarrassing one, I was so busy concentrating on staying on the track that I missed the chequered flag and ended up doing three or four extra laps.”

Belcher will contest the highly competitive 100cc Clubman Heavy category in the Australian-made Monaco kart and a European-made Kosmic chassis in the 125cc Leopard Heavy category.

Included in the 41-strong line up for the Clubman Heavy category there is no less than ten current or former National Champions, something Belcher believes will provide some great racing.

“There is no doubt that these Championships have attracted the best guys from all around the country but I think that quite a few guys from the North Queensland region will be able to surprise a lot of people with their speed,” said Belcher.

“The last time I raced at a National Championships was in Sydney two years ago. I was running inside the top ten in the Final until I bent the rear axle on my kart which ended my campaign. Hopefully this year I can finish the job and get a good result.”

Belcher is supported in his quest to become the National Champion by Remo Racing, Elle Bache, Four Seasons Air Conditioning and CSB Cabinet Designs.

Official practice for the Championships begins tomorrow (Tuesday) and will continue throughout the week until qualifying will be held on Friday. Heat races will be contested on Saturday followed by the Championship Finals on Sunday.
