Vic Open Preview

AKA press release

Over 400 of the country’s best kart racers will assemble in the Seymour region early next week when the rescheduled Victorian Open Sprint Kart Championships blasts into action at the Hume International Raceway on May 8–10.

The Event, originally scheduled for February 13-15 but postponed due to the tragic bushfires that devastated the region, will be one of the largest karting meetings held in Australia during 2009.

“This event is one that many karters across the country have been looking forward to for a number of months now and is certainly going to produce some great racing,” said Victorian Karting Association President David Murray.

“The Hume International Raceway is one of the best in the country and one that is the favourite for many of the country’s top drivers.

“With a number categories expected to have a full, or close to full, grid of 40 drivers competing, the racing will be spectacular all weekend long.”

With the rescheduling of this year’s Victorian Championships to after the National Championships, held earlier this month in Townsville, the Event will see no less than seven recently crowned Australian Champions in action.

Two such drivers are Melbourne drivers David Sera and Matthew Wall in the Clubman Light and Heavy categories respectively, between the pair they have now won 15 Australian Championships throughout their distinguished karting careers.

Proving that kart racing is a sport for people of all ages is the fact that drivers in the Midgets category are as young as seven years old, many of who will be competing in their first State Championship, while Horsham’s Remo Luciani, edging closer to 50 years of age, has got his sights set on State Championship number 49.

“While there is a lot of focus on the younger drivers in the sport, karting is not just for children and teenagers who aspire to make a career in motorsport, there are many more benefits available by being involved in the sport,” said Australian Karting Association President Richard Erdmann.

“Karting is a sport you can be competitive in with a relatively small budget while still enjoying the thrill of Motorsport and is a legitimate ‘stand alone’ field of competitive motorsport.

“The sport offers you much more than just a chance to race a go-kart, it provides you with a lifestyle for you and your family along with the opportunity to make some great friendships.

“Generally you will find that each driver will have at least two, possibly up to four, family members, mechanics and supporters who will travel to the event with them, all of whom the local economy will benefit from. Highlighting this information is the fact that accommodation for the weekend in the region is at a premium with very few hotels not already booked out.”

It is estimated the local economy stands to receive a boost in the vicinity of $550,000 from to the championships as the racing drivers, mechanics, teams and associates begin arriving early next week to gain valuable practice for the event beginning on Friday May 8.

The Hume International Raceway is one of the best in the country. In 2004 the venue played host to the National Championships and next weekend’s Event will act as a precursor to next year’s Nationals that will be contested at the venue.

Qualifying will be held on Friday May 8 with heat races to be contested on Saturday May 9 followed by the Championship Finals on Sunday May 10.
