Gympie's Qld State Title Shakedown

AKA press release

Kart racers from all across Queensland will be on the Sunshine Coast this weekend for the final warm-up event at the circuit ahead of next month’s State Championships to be hosted by the Cooloola Coast Kart Club in Gympie.

One local driver who is aiming to take full advantage of the extra competition which will be present this weekend is Mitchell Gee. Despite only being 11 years of age he is an experienced campaigner behind the wheel having been competing for over four years on the kart track.

“To race go-karts at my age is a real buzz, I really enjoy the racing but also the friends I’ve made and the fact that I’m learning a lot about driving while having fun,” said Gee.

Mitchell’s father, an experienced racer in his own right, says that he is more nervous watching his young protégé race than when he was behind the wheel on the dirt track.

“I’ll be the first to admit that I’m more nervous watching Mitchell race than I was when I was racing but only because I want him to do well and be the best he can be,” said Michael Gee.

“Karting, and motorsport in general for that matter, has been great for me and my family. It is certainly something that we can all be involved in and enjoy.”

Gee will face some touch opposition in the Junior categories from the likes of James Foster and Troy Morrissey, both of whom have shown some impressive speed over the previous few major events across the state.

Other local drivers expected to figure prominently include Ben Harm, who last weekend competed in Newcastle, and Jason Ebneter, who should be one to watch in Junior National Light while also racing the Formula JMA category for the second time.

Russell Whittaker and Dylan Brown will fly the local flag in the Rookies class as Harrison Oddy, who has faired well at Ipswich and Bundaberg of late, will do the same in the Midgets category.

Fresh from a top five finish against the Nation’s best drivers in the opening round of the Rotax Pro Tour at Newcastle last weekend Gold Coaster Damian Ward is keen to continue his good run of form this weekend.

Ward will be joined at the final shakedown event by his younger brother, Lucas, who will compete in the highly competitive Junior Clubman category. The duo have enjoyed various success at the Cooloola Coast circuit in the past and will be using this weekend’s event to gain valuable practice ahead of next month’s State Championships.

In the Senior ranks local drivers Shay Mayes (Clubman Heavy) and Kyle Kaminski (Leopard Light) should also be among the front runners.
