Supercheap Kart Series, Gladstone

Screeching tyres and roaring engines could be heard at the Gladstone Kart Club track on June 20-21 with the inaugural Supercheap Auto Kart Series in town.

The second round of the series brought nearly 100 drivers to the Harbour City with some big prizes drawing in racers from as far away as Narrabri and Cairns. Among the drivers were dozens of Gladstone hopefuls, keen to test themselves in the top-level competition.

Series co-ordinator John Lane said the weekend had been a big success. Lane had the idea to create the series after being offered a large number of prizes. While regularly involved in the Leopard class of racing, Lane said the offer of 30 tours with the V8 Super School meant he had expanded the series to include seven classes.

The series co-ordinator, who is involved with V8 ute racing as part of the pit crew, said the kart series was based on the same format. “It has the same points and score,” Lane said. The course was closed for a week before racing, to rule out any potential home-track advantage and drivers had the opportunity on Saturday to practise and perfect their kart set-up.

Lane said this was the first time a series of this nature had travelled to Central Queensland and was a reward for the high number of drivers from the area who travelled regularly.

The next round of the series will be held in Bundaberg in July before heading to Rockhampton in August.
