Kaminski Continues To Grow On Kart Track

At four years of age Kyle Kaminski made his Dad promise that when he turned six he would get a go-kart for his birthday.

Fifteen years on the Father and Son team are continuing to grow closer as they chase karting titles across the country. Next weekend Kyle will take on some of the Nation’s best drivers in the Southern Cross Motorsports Queensland State Championships at Gympie (July 3-5).

“Dad used race Sprintcars and my first motorsport memory was as a toddler going to the Maryborough Speedway watching him race and also, I was always out in the shed playing around when the crew was working on the car,” said Kaminski.

“I remember when I was four asking Dad for a kart knowing that I couldn’t start driving until I was six but for those two years all I would talk about was how long it was until I could start driving a kart.”

Over his time in the sport Kaminski believes karting has provided him with an opportunity for him and his father, Ross, to develop a closer bond than many people his own age.

“Two of the best things about the sport of karting are the competition on the track and the opportunity to spend time going away racing with your family, it has really brought us closer and there is no better way to spend time together,” said Kaminski.

Having missed last year’s Championships in Rockhampton due to a broken collarbone Kaminski is keener than ever for a good result in one of Australia’s top karting events on a track that he thoroughly enjoys competing on.

“I broke my collarbone in an accident so I missed the Queensland Championships but racing in the New South Wales titles and the National Championships has made me eager to gain a good result next weekend,” said Kaminski.

“The Gympie track is a very good track, it is extremely fast and flowing where consistency is really the key to success. I’ve had some mixed results there in the past but I was close to winning the Queensland Closed Championships there before finishing fourth last year."

Kaminski, who is in the final year of his plumbing apprenticeship, will compete in the 125cc Leopard and Rotax Light categories aboard his RK engines powered Kaminski Karting Arrow where he will line up against the likes of current National Champions Tyler Greenbury and David Sera.

“The competition at the State Championships will be extremely tough, with the National Champions in both of my classes competing, and my aim will be to finish inside the top five,” said Kaminski.

“Queensland really has some top drivers, including defending Champion John Grother from Gladstone, Tyler Greenbury and Brendon Nelson, who will really take the challenge to the interstate competitors.”

A total of 385 competitors will be racing at the Championships across 15 categories with drivers, both guys and girls, varying in age from seven years old in the Midgets class through to well over 40 years of age.

Practice for the event begins on July 1 followed by qualifying on Friday July 3. Racing will continue across the weekend with the championship finals being contested on Sunday July 5. The Cooloola Coast Kart Club is located on Runge Road, Gympie.
