1-2-3 For Greenbury: Qld Titles Qualifying

AKA press release

Rising Toowoomba star Tyler Greenbury has started his campaign at the Southern Cross Motorsports Queensland Karting Championships in stylish fashion at Gympie today.

Greenbury was the star of the show during qualifying to claim pole position in the Clubman Light category aboard his Tony Kart ahead of dual National Champion Matthew Waters and the reigning Australian Title holder David Sera.

Sera ensured that Greenbury’s confidence didn’t rise too high however by turning the tables on the teenager when the pair went head-to-head in the 125cc Rotax Light category.

Greenbury is one of the busiest drivers at the event also competing in the 125cc Leopard Light category where he posted the third fastest time behind Gladstone’s Cian Fothergill and Dubbo pilot Phillip King.

“It is a great start to the weekend,” said Greenbury. “There are some very high quality drivers in all three classes but I’m confident of being able to battle right near the front throughout the weekend.

“Since winning the National Championship at Easter time I haven’t done any testing or racing in the Leopard class so it is good to qualify as high up as I did.”

Greenbury’s older brother, Matt, made it two pole positions for the family when he topped the timesheets in the Leopard Heavy category. Qualifying second behind Greenbury was the current Australian Champion Kel Treseder.

Brisbane's Ben Jurczak was the dominant driver in the junior ranks qualifying on pole position for the highly competitive Junior Clubman and Formula JMA categories. In Junior Clubman Jurcak edged out Vodafone-backed Tony Kart driver Chris Hays and in Formula JMA it was Max Johnston who posted the second fastest time.

“I won my first state Championship in Melbourne last weekend, so it is good to continue this form into this weekend’s championships by qualifying on pole for both classes,” said Jurczak.

In the Midgets category, for youngsters aged between seven and ten years, it was Queensland drivers who showed the field a clean pair of heels during qualifying. Brisbane’s Jamie Grohman claimed the pole position narrowly ahead of Gold Coast’s Quintin Slabbert.

After breaking through for his maiden State Championship in May Portland’s Aaron Johnstone has continued his good form into this weekend’s event to set the fastest time in the Junior National Heavy class.
