NKA's NSW StateTitles

press relaease

The NKA NSW Titles were held last weekend at Wollongong City Raceway under brilliant conditions. Racing in all classes was sensational to watch with most classes going right down to the line on the last lap. Grant Gafa had the drive of the day after running two classes and taking home two blue plates.

Rookies were the first class out to fight for there blue plates and it didn’t take long to see that Drew Friend in his brand new kart was going to be the one to beat, but Kieran Fairlie was giving nothing away and staying in touch with Drew. The final saw Drew spread clear, after a first corner incident saw Kieran drive possibly the drive of the day, after going back to last and a long way behind climb his way with much determination to take second behind Drew. Connor Hey drove well all day to pick up 3rd spot in every race. There was only one Midget but Nathan Rourke drove well keeping up with the Rookies, Nathan stayed on track all day and deserved his first place trophy.

Junior National was fantastic racing all round, a very special mention has to go to the young girls racing in this class Shania Jones and Courtney Smith who drove well all day against the boys. The racing was pretty tough between team mate’s Jonothon Gauci and Ryan Suter, throw in Coire Donnelly and Reece Davidson as well to make a interesting top 4. After 16 laps in the final Jonothon  Gauci got the Chequered flag and a well deserved Blue plate while team mate Ryan Suter in 2nd and Coire Donnelly home in 3rd.

Junior Clubman lived up to its reputation as one of the toughest high performance junior classes. One of the closest classes on the day no body would be able to pick who was going to win each heat let alone the final. Daniel Nolan and Bryce Davidson showed top speed all day as they always do by winning a heat each. The final was not going to be nice to them with both boys sitting on side of  track at the start. This left one awesome race between Jack Bennett, Zoe Donnelly, Dean Henry-Smith and Daniel Fitzsimmons for the top 4 results. Jack drove well all day to take home the blue plate from Zoe in second and Dean in 3rd.

Senior National Light and Heavy saw some great close racing between Darryl Apps and Brad Moss in heavies and Cameron Moss and Alex Henry in Lights, all these guys together with many years experience put on a great show. Cameron hit the front early in the final and was never really in doubt of winning the blue plate in lights. Darryl Apps however who had pole for heavies seemed to have a mechanical failure after the opening lap which left a hard charging Brad Moss to take the win and blue plate for heavies.

Clubman Light was an action packed field with the unbeatable Ian Beeraz leaving his mark yet again and taking home the blue plate. The real battle all night was for the minor placing’s, which left current NKA National champion Alicia Whelan fighting it out for second with Robert Gurnnett who has shown some fantastic speed this year. Julian Wills and Peter Cannon showed some great speed throughout the day. The final saw a great fight early on between Alicia, Julian and Peter but the result was Alicia in second and clearing a nice gap over Robert in 3rd and Julian settling for 4th.

Clubman Heavy saw the return of Jason Varley who brought a mate with him in Rodney Marshall. Leigh Wright and team mate Justin Wills were always going to be up there and make for some good racing. As expected Jason won all the heats and claimed the blue plate, but Leigh home in 2nd and Rodney in 3rd didn’t let Jason get to far away. Rodney in his first season of racing kept right on Leigh’s tail for the 16 lap final, unfortunately for Rodney the experience of Leigh held on to a well deserved 2nd place.

Tag Restricted saw some new faces in John Goode, Manuel Velasco and Adrian Mills take on young guns Andrew Worner and defending state champion Chad Horsley. Andrew had pole position for final after winning all 3 heats, only a first lap incident from behind would stop Andrew’s impressive run, also a incident on same lap slowed Chad down as well. All this in 1 lap left Manuel Velasco leading the 16 lap final from Adrian Mills and John Goode. Andrew Worner with determination after being turned around drove back to a hard fought 3rd place behind 2nd place getter Adrian Mills and eventual winner Manuel Velasco. Manuel was delighted as this was his first outing in new kart and in restricted.

Tag Super Heavy and Shane Tate just seem to go together well as Shane Tate once again was unstoppable and took home a well deserved blue plate to add to his collection. Mark Horsley was consistent once again and showed some good speed early on, Tim Robson and Mark Battled hard throughout the final for second spot a rather exciting battle to watch. Mark got the upper hand and took home 2nd ahead of Tim who claimed 3rd place in his return drive after years out of the seat.

Grant Gafa dominated the Tag Red Light class, but not without a strong fight from Joe Gauci, Enzo Mendicino and Mitch Bennet. The 16 lap final saw Joe Gauci take the lead for the first half of the race, Grant at just after half way took the lead with a strong move and never looked back. Joe Gauci was left to take 2nd place with a fast finishing Mitch Bennet challenging hard with Joe, but settling for 3rd. Grant claimed his first blue plate, and soon to complete the double in Tag Yellow.

Dale Overton changed from Tag Yellow to red at last minute and it worked out to be a great call, as usual Dale was fast all day. Jean-Paul Bickel, Joe Mauriello and Paul Donovan were hot on Dale’s heels all day which led to a rather interesting final. Dale led the final from the start and looked fairly comfortable out in front to take the win and a Blue plate. Jean-Paul and Joe battled right through to the flag, the result was Jean-Paul claiming a well deserved 2nd place and Joe settling for 3rd and Paul Donovan in 4th.

Shifters were rather small class once again but that didn’t take anything away from the on track action, some awesome lap times were pulled out by all drivers. Dean Starling the current NKA National champion was the man to beat, Dean had a huge eye for claiming his blue plate to go with last years green. Dean never missed a gear all night to take a sensational win. Michael Pesce was a man on a mission taking out 2nd place ahead of last months Super Series winner Daniel Orsini taking home 3rd place.

Tag Yellow was the final class of the day and WOW did they save the best for last. Grant Gafa fresh of winning Tag Red Light had his toughest battle of the day against arch rival Daniel Coe and Youngster Matt Harris. These 3 guys put on some great racing all day. Daniel and Grant swapped positions many times during the race, but with 2 laps to go Matt Harris up the inside of Daniel Coe they came together and resulted in Daniel of track. Grant drove around the outside and off to claim a well deserved 2nd blue plate for 2009, with Matt Harris settling for 2nd and Matt Ferraro claiming 3rd place.
