Inter City Group 2009 ROTAX ICC, Round 4

from Ken Bensley

Across the weekend, the Toowoomba Kart Club played host to a revved up field in the 4th round of The Inter City Group 2009 ROTAX ICC, proudly presented by French Connection and Playboy Time.

The 2009 Rotax Inter Club Challenge is running in place of last years Queensland Rotax Series and is run under the same qualifying format as last year.   This year the event has expanded to include an over 35’s division running at 170kg and Jnr Max category that is now an official championship class.

For 2009 the Rotax ICC will visit 5 tracks and will run alongside the Clubman Gladiators ICC. Each of the Senior classes has prize money up for grabs at each round and some seriously cool prizes for Jnr Max.

Round 4 was blessed with arguably the best weather that we have seen along the ICC trail.

In Rotax Light, Tyler Greenbury demonstrated for the crowd just how quick you can get a kart around the Toowoomba circuit posting a 41.262 in qualifying to secure pole for the start of the heats.  Damian Ward placed his machine on P2 with a 41.275 and Andrew Gatland rounded out the Top 3 qualifiers with a 41.461.  Tyler Greenbury and Damien Ward in the end were the stars of the show lap after lap in the Final with their times 100ths of each other.   Kyle Ensbey dug deep and put in an impressive effort to try and keep himself within striking distance of Ward and Greenbury.  With 3 corners to go on the final lap Ward looked set to take the flag however Greenbury had other idea’s with an impressive pass Greenbury snatched the lead, the flag and the $250 Cheque.  The final result was Tyler Greenbury 1st, Damien Ward 2nd and Kyle Ensbey 3rd, the day also saw some very impressive drives from Abbey Kellie, Andrew Gatland and Matt Sinkins.

In the Heavy field, Jonathan Dwyer showed that persistence and practice pays off taking pole for the start of Racing with a 41.975 in Qualifying.  Lane Moore stepped out for the 1st time in his factory prepped Intrepid and knocked out an impressive 42.064 to put him on P2, Scott Coates rounded out the top 3 qualifiers.  Lane Moore dominated throughout the heats and looked set to run away in the final however Dwyer had worked hard all day and was not going to let Moore just walk away with the prize money the two raced nose to tail for the whole 12 laps but in the end Moore was too strong and took the win.  Final result was Lane Moore 1st, Jonathan Dwyer 2nd and Scott Coates 3rd.  Scott Coates is not registered for the ICC so the round points for 3rd will be awarded to the next registered driver home which in this case is Cameron Harch.

Rotax over 35’s saw Nigel Ward on pole, Paul Morandini off P2 and David Rotstein off P3.  All the boys put on a great show all day and there was lots of close racing action and plenty of excitement.  Robbie Daniels was Mr Consistent all day to show that commitment and consistence will get you out in front. In the end the final result was Robbie Daniels with a well deserved 1st (about bloody time), Paul Morandini  2nd, David Rotstein 3rd.

Jordan Lloyd was on the hunt with a 41.772 and Hayden Cooper took P3 with a 41.801. We witnessed arguably some of the best racing of the day by the youngsters and in the end, Jack Howard was too strong on the day and took the win and the very cool Everlast watch kindly supplied by ICC sponsor Inter City Group.  Jordan Lloyd took 2nd and Hayden Cooper took 3rd.

Co-ordinator Ken Bensley said “We were blessed with awesome winter weather and an enjoyable weekend of racing action.  The drivers put on a great show and thanks should also go to all families and supporters of the drivers, for getting them prepped and onto the race track.  It was great to see such a great turn out supporting the Rotax Class.  We go forward with just one event to go, the finals, to be held at Ipswich Kart Club in just two weeks time.  Awesome Winners Belts, Cash, Prizes and bragging rights up for grabs.”
