Sunday’s racing was ultra competitive with little separating the leading Pro Clubman Light Series drivers.  Adding fuel to this already volatile competition was the addition of non-Series competitors Brock Ten Bensel and Australian # 1, Tyler Greenbury.

Nelson having locked away a 4th, 5th and 8th place in the 3 Warwick 15Klm races, had accumulated sufficient points (404) to secure the overall Series win from Cian Fothergill (403), Ben Stewart (390), Justin Garioch (387) and Shay Mayes (357).

So close were the points, that drivers weren’t immediately sure after the last race who had in fact won the outright Series.  It wasn’t until later at the Series Dinner trophy presentations that the final results were announced and Nelson was awarded the Pro Clubman Light Series Cup & V8 Supercar Ride Day prize by a single point advantage.
Series Nominations for the South West Queensland Round were strong, with competitors entered across the 7 Series’ classes offered and the bonus Formula 100 class added for the closing round.  For the final round, Event organisers and Series Sponsor Supercheap Auto also went out of their way to ensure that a Supercheap Auto / Paul Morris Motorsport V8 Supercar was on display in the main Pit Area on Sunday.

Brendan’s weekend results were as follows;

Pro Clubman Light - Brendan Nelson (Kosmic # 70)
Starting from the outside in position 2 Nelson fired through the first corner alongside pole sitter Justin Garioch, only to be out braked and caught wide on entry into Turn 2. Nelson then dropped more positions through the field with his motor seemingly getting hot around lap 9.  Just as he felt the results slipping away, the field came back to him in the last handful of laps and he was able muscle his way back to fourth place before the chequered flag fell.

Race 2 would bring another outside start for Nelson but this time from row 2 of the grid.  Being much more assertive in the opening laps, Nelson drove hard to work his way up to second place by mid race.  As the laps accumulated and his kart went off, Nelson was overtaken in the closing stages and fell back into 5th place.

On a cracker from the outset of Race 3, Nelson drove aggressively to keep the likes of Fothergill and Garioch at bay.  All of this early energy undermined Nelson’s ability toward the end of the longer 22 lap race.  He fell back through the field and finished 8th.

“We had a shocker of a day at Warwick with the Kart going off early in every race.  I was back in the van on the laptop between races trying to recalculate my point gap each time, but in the end we had just one point in the bag to pip Cian for the Series win,” said Brendan. “That’s the really important result for me, our Team and supporters.”

Leopard Light – Brendan Nelson (Kosmic # 70)
Nelson withdrew from Leopard Light racing after finishing 7th in Race 1 due to issues with the rear axle of his kart and his desire to concentrate his efforts on the Pro Clubman Light title.

“The Pro Clubman Light Series win is a terrific result for Brendan and his devoted parents.  Our Team and its’ Partners are very pleased,” said DRK Team Manager, Craig Doyle.  “We’re also grateful to AKAQ, Supercheap Auto, V8 SuperSchool and all of the Series’ associate Sponsors for providing a great regional series.  I would also like to say thanks John Lane, Series Coordinator, Kelly Johnson, Series Media Liaison, all of the Volunteers & Officials and the host clubs.  It takes a village of support and some great drivers like Cian, Ben, Justin & Shay to bring something like this together and we’re very grateful for that.”
