Galvo's Brian Farley Memorial Race Report

by Peter Galvin

Well it all started on Friday morning. We awoke to a beautiful day, the track was looking a million bucks with the lawns all mowed and the ripple strips painted. We had some of our great sponsors signage up around the track and the karters had began to flow into the track and set up their little area.

Practice started at 9.00am. The first session was a little quiet as most people were still setting up. The second session came and now the Pro Clubman guys and girls started to fill the grid. Already the talk around was who was fastest !!! 3rd,4th and 5th sessions came and went and so did the times that people had done, Waters was fast as was Whitmore. Greenbury had to run an engine in so had yet to show everyone what he had in the bag. Baker was a no show!! He had to work or maybe he knew something we all didn't. He did turn up at the end of the day to find out the times and who was the pace. Waters had a 43.0 in the Mycron so did Whitmore,Greenbury a 43.1 Hunt 43.3, Hrynuik 43.4, Farley the man of the moment had done a 43.1 lets hope he can continue that into racing. These where just some of the times that had been passed around the pits. The old "Did you here what time Waters just did" I tried not to listen as Galvin was doing 43.7 oh no I was thinking its going to be a long weekend !!!

Saturday Morning : 8:15am drivers briefing.

The usual stuff was said Troy Farley came up and thanked everyone for coming to celebrate his fathers time here it was very moving.

Ok here we go !!!  "Clubman pro to the grid for separate carbie session" !! "Low numbers first through to 36, high numbers from 36 onwards in the second session".
Around they go for the carbie session all on old tyres just making sure the kart is ready to do that one fast lap, most people are doing 44.0 - 43.9 in carbie it was only 2 or 3 laps I ask Baker "how did yours feel mate" he says yeah ok but I need to find some pace only did a "6" !!  "I go what a 44.6 mate your in deep shit" he says No mate a 43.6 .....

Anyway some of the other classes had started their qualifying

Joey Mawson on pole for Junior Performance with a 42.271. Toby Bellbowen in 2nd 2 tenths off the pace

Iain Thornton pole in Senior Nat over 40's with a cracking time of 49.0, 4 tenths ahead of the king of Sydney man from last year Brian Sciberras.

Scott Simpson grabs pole with a 45.583 ahead of  John Pardalis with a 45.8.

Joshua Car on pole with a 50.4 in Midgets with Jessie Attard on the front row with him with a 50.7

Andreas Chronis one of the future stars of our sport has pole in Rookies blasting a time of 47.7 James Abela 2nd fastest with a 47.9

First of the pro classes Junior National Pro @130kg

After the merged sessions it was very close and we look to be in for some great racing on pole we had Cameron Hill with a 47.138 posted in his first run on the front row with him is Macauley Jones 47.146 set in his second session .

Tag Pro :

Was next and after the time's are merged we had Matt Nipperess on pole with a 42.293 set in his first run. Craig Stauner sits the first run out Probably because he was driving the pick up vehicle or the "shame train" as it is known at our track... He does do the second session and grabs second with a 42.432.

Senior Nat Pro :

Another class set to be an absolute nose to tail fest ..  Corey Lean on pole for this one with a 47.612 set in his first run Matt Waters in second and off the front row with a 47.644 set in his first run, he doesn't go out in the second session saving SL1's ??? or maybe himself Matt is doing 2 classes this one and the big one Pro Clubman.

TaG Restricted Pro:

Well this class continues to grow and surprise us with the skill some of these drivers show Kyle Sandona grabs pole after the times are merged with a 43.912 in second is Colin Auld with a 44.225 great time's for these guys @170kg ....

Clubman Pro :

54 karts lined up for qualifying !!  only the top 35 will make it into the "show" without doing the dreaded repechage some amazing sights as all these karts get ready to try their very best. Now we find out who was really fast on Friday !!  As they say all the BS stops on Saturday morning !!!

After all the dust had settled and the combined times are taken We have Tyler Greenbury on pole with a great time of 43.078 along side him on the front row is David Whitmore with a 43.180 some of the other "big names"  where scattered through the field but most of them are in the top ten. The cut off is spot 35 and the lucky man is Peter Galvin with a 43.683 phew !!!  some surprises are Jason Varley 33rd with a 43.671 and Tim Monte 43.677 yep its that close... We have some big names in the repechage Steve Scoble, Grant Dyga, and Jessica Golding...

Clubman Pro Repechage :

18 drivers lined up for the repechage and we all stood watching waiting for the carnage, its been so long since most people had seen one of these races we didn't know what to expect !! A last minute decision from the club to "not" send anyone home and allow room in the race program for a clubman "B" race might of had an effect on the style of racing. It turned out to be a great race for the minor placing Jaie Robson put in a commanding performance in the race to streak away to a dominant win and book his way into the "A" field. The battle raged behind him as Dyga,Hollings, Roffey,Golding and Nolan all battled to make the top 5. Then on the last lap, last corner Roffey running third has a major engine seize !!  Everyone felt for the young fella his first race in seniors how cruel this sport can be. That inturn handed 5th place to Daniel Nolan he would go through to the main show.

Top Ten Shootout :

This was set up to be great to watch 1 out lap 1 fast lap and 1 in lap.. that's all they got this is how it started. first out was Multiple national champ Mall Wall he puts in a fine drive but just can't seem to get enough grip into the kart although he is smooth. Next out is  Jason Burns he too has the same trouble, Matt Waters now one of the locals he put down a very good time.  Nick Agland is next and post a good time they are all around the 43.9 mark. Jason Hrynuik is next he looks good but still not fast enough although he does go to the top for now..Daniel Baker rolls out he has done more laps around here than most can he turn that into an advantage.... Yes he can a great time 43.6 puts him on pole. Brendan Nelson puts in a great drive but can't knock Baker from the top step, Ben Sewart drives the wheels off his kart but is a bit loose he drops a wheel coming onto the home straight that would hurt dropping him to 8th !! Out comes David Whitmore he is fast and smooth but not good enough to knock Baker off pole, only one to come now Tyler Greenbury can he do it? What magic has his mechanic Shayne Piper worked on his kart? He looks fast he is super smooth a perfect lap from the young man and bangs it on pole with a 43.3 !!! WOW !!!!!!

The crowd filters back into the pit area. Something I have never seen is taking place. "Spectators" heaps of them people have come in off the street to watch!! The club had put a sign up on the main road advertising the event thanks to David Stein. The place is packed and when the Pro Clubman guys are on the track its hard to find a spot to see the race !!!

Junior Performance Heat 1 :

Toby Bellbowen gets the money just ahead of Joey Mawson they cross the line nose to tail and a gap back to Jake Coleman for 3rd.

Senior Nat over 40 Heat 1

Iain Thornton wins this one by 2 seconds over last years club champ Niven Riches. Sciberras and Gerald Chait DNF a shame for Chait he is the fastest kart on the track by 2 tenths...

Clubman super Heavy Heat 1 :

These guys are turning it on for the crowd John Pardalis beating multiple national champ Scott Simpson the both race side by side and nose to tail for the whole race ending with Pardalis getting the win can he keep it up ?

Midgets Heat 1 :

Josh Car is showing the field how classy a driver he is and wins ahead of  Jessie Attard. Jett Bennet is fast in 3rd but the fastest lap goes to Cody Brewczynski he will be one to watch in his new kart..

Rookies Heat 1 :

James Abela sets the fastest time and wins heat 1 over a fast finishing Adreas Chronis a small gap back to Jayden Ojeda

Junior Nat Pro Heat 1 :

Jordan Zammit does very well and looks to have plenty of pace winning heat 1 setting the fastest time Macauly Jones 2nd and Jonathon Venter 3rd in a great drive not much in it as its a very close race. One mistake and you could drop 4 spots easy.

TaG Pro Heat 1 :

Craig Stauner shows his local knowlage of the place blitzing the field winning by over 3 seconds back to Matt Bailey in 2nd Mat Nipperess comes home in 3rd.

Senior Nat Pro Heat 1 :

Typical J racing this one close the leaders follow each other pushing and pushing Corey Lean and Matt Waters work together to gain a small gap on the rest of the field Lean takes the win by the smallest margin Waters 2nd a gap back to Shannon Holly in 3rd. Nothing in it in lap times !!!

Tag R Pro Heat 1 :

Kyle Sandona takes the win 2nd goes to Kris Bail and 3rd Scott Willoughby showing some new found pace and storming through the field.

Pro Clubman Heat 1

We all get through the first 2 corners then all hell brakes lose Turner, Holly make contact Wilson is in there to Turner helpless comes back onto the track Galvin has no place to go slamming into Turner, Maxfield goes under Galvin massive crash then the very next lap Robinson rolls over the top of Tim Dennis "Red Flag" Galvin is taken away in the Ambulance and we have a restart. Greenbury wins that's all I know !!!!
But what I can tell you is the Ambo girl was a looker !!!!

Junior Performance Heat 2 :

Mawson returns the favour on Bellbowen and these two are set for a great weekend of racing Jake Coleman brings it home in 3rd.

Senior Nat over 40 Heat 2 :

Iain Thornton again wins from a very fast Gerald (QuickBooks) Chait, Niven Riches and Brian Sciberras make contact handing 3rd to Jenny Taylor, Sciberrs recovers to post the fastest lap of the race.

Clubman Super Heavy Heat 2 :

Scott Simpson wins this one ahead of John Paradise, very closely followed by  David Endres and Andrew Frazer who is supported by Nova 96.9 ....

Midgets Heat 2 :

Young Josh Car again wins, 2nd is that young man with the best racing name on the planet Jett Bennet, 3rd is Cody Brewczynski showing fine form in his Christmas present !!!

Rookies Heat 2 :

This is an action replay of the first heat James Abele grabs the win and Andreas Chronis 2nd, 3rd goes to Jayden Ojeda finishing 4 seconds behind the front 2.

Junior National Pro Heat 2 :

Well this race signalled the arrival of young Dmitri Agatha's this was the first race meeting out of Rookies for him he didn't qualify that well but now he is driving the wheels of his new Monaco. Jordan Summit gets the win but only just over a fast Agatha's. You can see most of the Dads saying who the hell is this kid !! Macaulay Jones  comes home in 3rd and 4th goes to Trent Gruel 5 tenths of a second cover the top 4 !!  These kids are really turning it on for the crowd.

Tag Pro Heat 2 :

Stunner wins he is driving away from them its all to easy in his spare time he is driving the "Shame Train" and not even touching his kart but still he wins by 5 seconds second is Bailey, 3rd Sam Breen

Senior Nat Pro Heat 2 :

Matt Waters takes the win. Corey Lean Duff's in lap 6, Shannon Holly grabs 2nd  and Shaun Cleary comes home in 3rd.

Tag OR Pro Heat 2 :

Kyle Sandon is dominating in this race he wins by  6 seconds 2nd goes to Kris Bail and 3rd see's Colin Auld find some of his pace again.

Clubman Pro Heat 2 :

Once again the crowd is packed into the grandstand Greenburg gets a great start and pulls a gap the rest are fighting over the minors Waters get shuffled back again Varley is coming and comes from 33rd to 19th  the class in this field is amazing this is the top ten from this race and only 5 seconds separates 1st to 10th Wall-e gets 10th then Phillips, Burns, Stewart, Agland, Whitmore, Hrynuik, Nelson, and Baker comes home in second. But there is no doubt Greenbury is the man to beat. Will they let him drive off again at the start? He did come back to them towards the end of that race so its not over yet still a long way to go.

Clubman "B" Heat 2 :

Young Beck Connell in her first meeting out of Juniors wins the "B" race and does it easy beating poor old Andrew Roffey with his no 2 Borrowed engine.

We will skip heat 3 as this report is taking way to long although Clubman Pro produced one of the best races seen in a long long time with lead changes nearly every lap

Sunday :

Clubman Pro Heat 3:

Tim Dennis has pole this heat in top 15 inverted Kel Treseder is on the front row this race was set to be a cracker they get the green and as they cross the start finish line we have a pile up and we lose Hudson, Raynard, Monte and Wilson. Golding also goes out and some are saying they see Greenbury on the sideline but that turns out to be wrong..Treseder Takes the lead Dennis has it in reverse and is being swamped by the field. Waters gets another bad run he is just getting pushed out of the way !!!  Burns takes the lead then Hunt takes it away from him and Burns goes from 1st to 5 th in 2 corners !!! Baker goes under Treseder as does Greenbury and he is on the hunt trying to run down Baker. Hrynuik battles for the lead Wall is there as well. Now we have a train of ten or more karts. Greenbury is now right behind Baker this is the battle for pole for the pre final. Into Carousel Greenbury makes contact with Baker and goes past dropping Baker down the list a couple of spots as a few others take advantage. Burns fights he way back to 2nd then the lead then Hunt takes it back again that's how they finish WHAT a race !!!! top 15 are separated by 2 seconds 1st Hunt, 2nd Burns, 3rd Wall, then it goes Whitmore, Hrynuik, Greenbury, Agland, Baker, Treseder, Sciberras, Nelson, Robinson, Stewart, Phillips, Waters......

Now we go to the finals for all the other classes :

Junior Performance :

A great race between Bellbowen and Mawson with Coleman finally showing his potential. It comes down to the last lap Mawson leading Bellbowen 2nd there is contact and Mawson is forced wide Coleman comes through and grabs 2nd Bellbowen wins it and Mawson recovers for 3rd.

Senior Nat over 40 Final :

Brian Sciberras waits until the final race to show his class taking the win over Iain Thornton who had been winning all weekend until this last race 3rd goes to Niven Riches in a good solid drive he sets the fastest lap on the second last lap !!!!

Clubman Super Heavy Final :

Scott Simpson comes home with the win over John Pardalis John won the Pre final and looked the good going into the final but he didn't have the pace he had in the pre final Simpson didn't go faster either but was jsut as fast as the race before 3rd went to David endres who closed the gap on John over the closing stages !!

Midgets Final :

Cody Brewzynski won the pre final and we all though he might be able to upset Joshua Car in the final. But Josh put his kart on the grid and was determined to drive the wheels off it and he did. He grabbed the lead early and then set about gapping the rest of them lap after lap he did the same time over and over. Travis Worton came through fro a well deserved 2nd, he was followed by Cody Brewzynski in 3rd Young Jett Bennet came home in 4th and in only his second race of his career Nicholas Golding showed us all that he will carry on the Golding name long after his big sister grabbing his first trophy in 5th !!

Rookies Final :

James Abela won this one he was very fast all weekend this race was a good one but to be honest they couldn't match the winner Andreas Chronis took it to him for a bit but just didn't have the kart speed to win it  James Duckworth came home in 3rd ahead of Jayden Ojeda in 4th and one of our little favourite racers Josh Buggy came home in 5th....

Junior Nat Pro Pre final, Final :

What a race from these young fella's the pre final was a great race Dmitri Agatha's shadowed Jordan Summit for the whole race and on the last corner he waited Summit block on the inside and Agatha's drove the normal line but backed off that tiny bit he got a great run onto the final straight and they went across the line together.  Agatha's got the nod by  .012 of a second !!!

The final was looking the same Agatha's following the whole race he was faster in some bits and slower in others but we all thought its only a matter of time even Summit thought it. Gruel and Jones started their charge through the field picking karts off together.Young Jacob Parsons worked hard and got into 3rd with a few to go and most thought that spot might win it ! Michael Potter and Jonathan Venter latched onto Grubel and Jones, then they caught Parsons but it was to late Zammit and Agathos came down again to the last corner this time Zammit doesn't block as much giving him a better run Agathos tries his same move but to no avail... Zammit wins Agathos 2nd, Parsons 3rd, Grubel 4th and Macauley Jones rounds out the top 5. Great race

 TaG Pro Final

Well I would love to talk this race up but it was a race of one man Craig Stuaner he blew them away 2nd went to Sam Breen in a solid drive 3rd was Mat Nipperess.

Senior Nat Pro, Pre final ,Final :

The pre final had it all lead changes bumping pushing a great race Craig Thornton showed his talent and won ahead of Matt Waters and Corey lean. What would the final bring us would Waters and Lean let Thornton get a lead? The race started in the rollup laps Waters backing off and hanging Thornton out on his own then just as Thornton looked back Waters went and so did Lean Thornton drops back into the train and we are off .  Blake Sciberras joins the party as does Darren Harris again typical J racing nose to tail the whole race in the end Waters takes a very good win from Lean, Sciberras came home for 3rd.

TaG R Pro Final :

Kyle Sandona just drove away with this he took the lead form the start and didn't look back  . Scott Willoughby came home in 2nd, Kris Bail 3rd

Clubman Pro Pre Final :

I now realise that as a driver its so important to be part of races like this one. Just to make it into the same field as some of these guys and girls is something to be cherished.

Greenbury has pole but there is now way they are going to let him get the start he has been getting. The role up laps are filled with tension as everyone knows that this is it you need to finish well in this race to be in a chance to win the trip to Disneyland from our great sponsor JetSet BlueMountains Glenbrook. All of a sudden Treseder pulls over going up the hill !! he is out of the kart looking at the front of it they come around and no start is given Treseder returns to the pits into the breakdown lane its his nose cone he has it in his lap!!!!  Maybe the clamps have fallen off !! They come around again no start Greenbury is trying to get a jump on the field. They have now had 3 attempts at starting!! That's it pull in everyone the dreaded red and white checker and the whole field comes in. Great news for Kel as he has now fixed the nose cone !!

They line back up and Greenbury has been punished and put back 3 or 4 spots !! This is huge Whitmore now has pole. They get the green light this time and the racing starts Hrynuik moves into 2nd then leads then back to 2nd then 3rd . Waters looks to be fast and is right there, Nelson, Burns and Baker are battling for positions Hrynuik back into 2nd Whitmore takes the lead. Hunt is back in 9th and has it all to himself .Agland in 8th then its 2 seconds up the road to the leaders 1st to 7th covered by .9 of a second !! Great racing Whitmore takes the win although Greenbury and Hrynuik both had a go at leading the later taking home 2nd Greenbury slots into 3rd then Burns, Waters, Nelson and Baker rounds out the top 7.

Clubman Pro Final :

Well this is it !!

Its almost a shame it has to end the racing has been sublime, the passing the jostling and the different race plans have all been on show.

Whitmore has pole for the final and the front row he shares with Jason Hrynuik the old and the new !! Both very talented Greenbury is in 3rd and many say that is the best place to start from at the creek !! Out they go for the roll up laps they come down the hill and a huge crowd has gathered to watch this race not a sole has gone home. They come down they hill and as a sign of acknowledgment to the massive crowd the whole field waves as they go past for the first time. The Crowd in turn gives out a huge roar of approval. Its as though we are about to watch the Gladiators in the Coliseum Duel it out!!

Next time around they get the green Whitmore takes the lead with Greenbury right behind Hrynuik is in 3rd Baker has gone from 7th to 10th and many beleive the local favourite can't do it from there ! Nelson Waters and Hrynuik start to battle and Greenbury takes the lead from whitmore. Lap 5 and Thommy Phillips has an engine drama coming out of the flip flop karts go everywhere Blake Sciberras clips a kart and cartwheels up the hill and onto the grass sending him flying through the air !! A shame for him he had just posted the fastest time of the race. We lose Phillips,Last years runner up Rahaley he smashes into Phillips, Robinson and Sciberras. Back to the front and Greenbury still has the lead Whitmore looks to be just calmly sitting there waiting for the right moment he has a look and see's they are pulling a gap to the rest of the field. Hryniuk, Waters and Nelson start to battle and guess who is coming through the pack. Daniel Baker is storming through his kart looks superb (Galvin was seen working on his kart before the final) he latches onto the back of Nelson a few laps go by and Baker takes that spot Waters and Hrynuik to go then he has to chase down the leaders who are 2 seconds up the road !! Greenbury still has the lead, Whitmore just sitting waiting looking after the tyres and engine he is doing everything right Greenbury pushes a little harder and tries to brake Whitmore he pulls the smallest of gaps but it is gone in half a lap Whitmore wants this you can tell. Baker now takes Waters then pounces on Hrynuik he now has 3rd and put his head down only 3 to go he is closing them down but not fast enough they get the last lap board Whitmore has a look at turn 2 no go!! We all think thats it its all over Greenbury blocks at Kart Club Corner up the hill and into carousel Baker has caught up a heap now and is about 4 kart lengths away into carousel and Whitmore makes his move up the inside one of the best moves I have seen at that corner they go side by side around the top of the circuit guess who is right there now its Baker thing is the two leaders don't even know he is there the last time they looked he was miles away !! Down the hill they come Whitmore blocks on the inside Greenbury has his nose cone attached to his rear crash bar. They start to turn the corner but Whitmore is being pushed past the apex Greenbury turns hard right to get to the apex and clips Whitmore's rear wheel sending the front of his kart up in the air. Baker takes his normal line and slides past the two of them Greenbury is out on the dirt and Whitmore has bogged down from the contact. Baker wins it !!!! Whitmore just gets 2nd ahead of Hrynuik then Waters then Greenbury crosses the line on the grass in 5th then Burns, Agland, Nelson Hunt and Stewart round out the top ten..... What a race !!!!!!!  A fitting final to this great meeting.
