Wearie, who has won back-to-back Club Championships at the Puckapunyal venue for the Eastern Lions Kart Club, will be competing in the fastest junior category – Junior Clubman – at the event.

It will be the first time that Wearie has competed on the biggest stage in Australian karting, but this is something that doesn’t faze the 15 year-old.

“I’m really looking forward to taking on the best drivers from all across the country on my home track – it is really exciting,” said Wearie.

“There are 33 other drivers in my category, all of whom will be hard to beat. So the first aim will be to qualify well before finishing all of the heat races and then going for it in the final, which is where it matters most.”

Supporting Wearie every step of the way will be his father Craig, who used to race go-karts some 25 years ago in the Numurkah region. Wearie encouraged his two boys to try their hand at karting after moving to the Seymour region three years ago.

“When we moved to Seymour I was racing Mud Drags but with a great kart track and club just around the corner our focus as a family quickly turned towards karting,” said Craig Wearie.

“Karting is a great family sport, we’re all heavily involved in the club and can’t wait for next weekend to roll around.

“The racing gives the kids a lot of enjoyment but it is the lessons that they learn both on and off the track which I believe is the best part of the sport.

“The sport really keeps the teenagers on the straight and narrow, while teaching them a lot about mechanical skills along with personal and driving skills. They learn a lot about respect and you always see the fiercest of competitors on the track enjoying some fun off the track at the end of the day.”

Wearie is supported in his quest to become Australian Champion by local business GV Security Fencing along with ARC Fences and Pro Karting.

A total of 356 entries have been received across ten categories for the championships with qualifying beginning on Friday April 2 followed by heat races on Saturday April 3 and the championship finals on Sunday April 4.

The Hume International Raceway is located on the Tooborac Road, Puckapunyal.
